  1. Combustionenginesmainprinciples and definitions Reciprocating combustionengines architecture Reciprocating engines dynamic properties Engine components and systems The engine management system for gasoline and Diesel engines The emission Requirements & Technology Engine vehicle integration 7.1 Engine layout and mounting 7.2 Engine-vehicle cooling system 7.3 Intake system 7.4 Exhaust system • John Heywood, Internal Combustion Engine Fundamentals / McGraw-Hill • Charles F. Taylor, The internal Combustion Engine in Theory and Practice /The M.I.T. Press • Automotive Handbook – R. 2. Architecture configuration In-line engine The cylinders are arranged consecutively in a single plane V-engine The cylinders are arranged in two planes in a V configuration Radial engine The cylinders are arranged radially in one or more planes Opposed-cylinder (boxer) engine The cylinders are horizontally opposed

  3. 4 in-line engine configuration

  4. Boxer engine configuration / “flat four”

  5. 5 in-line engine configuration

  6. V6 @ 60° engine configuration

  7. V8 @ 72° engine configuration

  8. V10 @ 72° engine configuration

  9. A model 5 cylinder radial engine built by Ron Lane. 1850hp Wright R-2600-29 Cyclone 14-cylinder radial. Note that this is effectively two 7 cylinder radials back to back with the rear bank of cylinders being rotated half the cylinder to cylinder spacing.
