  1. Birth of PNST: National programme on SolarTerrestrial Relations • Whydidwe propose PNST, a joint venture between the solar and the magnetosphericcommunity? • Key role of Alan; the first chairman!

  2. Whydidwe propose PNST ? The activity in the solar corona has a direct influence on the ionizedenvironment of the Earth. The corona, the solarwind and the magnetosphere-ionosphereform a complex system thatreacts to solaractivity. Solar and magnetosphericcommunitiesshare the sametheoreticaltools: plasma physics. Yet, 15yers ago, collaborations werequite rare becauseexperimentaltools are verydifferent.

  3. The expected participations in Solar Orbiter and Solar Probe missions wereoffering new opportunities to combine remotesensing and in situ instruments on a single platform, with new scientific prospects. • There was a wishfrom INSU to structure the astrophysicalcommunity and to establishackowledgedevaluation bodies. • I contacted Alan, whowas the obviouspartner, to propose and build a joint programme on SolarTerrestrialphysics. Hisdeepknowledge of plasma physicshelped a lot. • Alan wasunanimouslyelected chairman of the scientificcommittee. He wasvery active atpromoting the programme.

  4. Tribute to a talentedchaiman • I call up withpleasure the 6 yearsweworkedtogether. The collaboration with Alan wasalwaysfruitful and friendly. There wereneverany (magnetic) cloudbetween us; wealwaysfound a « gentleman » agreement. • Alan wasexceedinglycleveratsolvingdelicateproblemswithin the community. He should have a magicrecipe…maybehisslight accent. • Anyway, thanks to hiswiseadvices PNST has been put on the right tracks and (still) has a highvisibility.

  5. Amongothers I remindsome suggestions Alan made several times : do not preparetoomuchyourtalks…youwillloosespontaneity! • I leaveit to you to decide if I followedhisadvice!

  6. Examples of joint works • Theoretical(including simulations) and experimentalworks on plasma turbulence in particular in the Solar Wind (IAS, Nice, LPP and LESIA) • « Ateliers» on reconnexion and shocks. • Collaborations on SO and SP probes thatimplementboth in-sitù and remotesensinginstruments.
