  3. Examination Techniques • Prepare • Read the question • Make rough notes • Use your time wisely • 5 marks = 5 bits of information • Lots of sleep and exercise • Relax – deep breath, positive self-talk

  4. Why do I have to do exams? • Test what you have learnt, • To show us what you have learnt, • Practice how to study and how to do exams for future years, • Become familiar with process = less fear

  5. How can I succeed? • Nothing succeeds like hard work! • Concentrate on what you can control: i.e. how much work you do, how prepared you are and how positive & relaxed you face the exams. • Learn from mistakes & grow from experience • Set a realistic goal – compete only against yourself.

  7. Greek Definitions • Write definitions to the following words: • Acropolis • Agora • Democracy • Frescoes • Hoplites • Lion Gate • Oracle • Phalanx

  8. Minoan Civilisation: 3000 – 1450 BCE Answer the following questions in full sentences: • Who was Sir Arthur Evans? What did he find? • Why did he call this civilisation ‘the Minoans’? • What was at Knossos? • What is a fresco? Give some examples from Knossos. • What theories do archaeologists have about bull-leaping? • Were the Minoans a war-like people? How do we know? • Retell the story of Theseus and the Minotaur.

  9. The Mycenaeans: 1600 – 1100BCE • Based on the Greek mainland this civilisation was hinted at in ancient Greek poetry. Graves of Kings found by Schliemann 1876. This included a gold funeral mask. • Different to the Minoans, they worshipped the Gods of Olympus and had heavily fortified towns. They traded around the Aegean Sea with a large fleet. • The capital was the city of Mycenae which has the famous ‘lion gate’ at the entrance.

Use the following words to write a paragraph about democracy in Athens: citizen, ecclesia, ostracism, metic, constitution, council of 500, assembly, 10 generals, juries. Write a paragraph highlighting the differences between Sparta and Athens.

  22. Final Tips • Always study with a pen or highlighter in your hand – never just read. • Summarise – mind map - list • Get a good night’s sleep. • Stay calm. (breathe, count to 10) • “If all else fails, read the question.” • Make notes on scrap paper before answering. • Remember you are competing against yourself, not other students.
