  2. #1 • Environmental Unity is the concept that the ecosystem is connected and if you address one issue then other issues will be effected. • An example of this is discussed on page 142 under the green subheading “Challenges for the Future” • YOU MUST INTERPRET the passage in light of the movie.

  3. # 2 • Gaia Theory is states that life and the inorganic substances that life needs to sustain itself are dependent on each other. • Life is regulated by inorganic substances such as water, sunlight, carbon dioxide, oxygen, and minerals. ‘ • This relates to balance of the ecosystem but its more than the section in your book on pages 74-80. Compare this concept to the idea of Gaia in the movie

  4. # 3 • Sustainability • To answer this question define sustainability (145); then read pages 154-155 on conserving biodiversity. • How does economics, social and cultural issues effect the ecology of the movie.

  5. #4 • Resource management: 144-149 • There are a number of resources mentioned between these pages… • Land • Forest • Fishery • Air • Freshwater • Which one of the above is being addressed in avatar?

  6. #5 • Look at the model of the science/social science history connection on page 154-155 (it’s the timeline) • How doe the authors make the connections between the two subjects? • Name one issue in the movie that ties into one of these social science topics and then use what you have learned in history .

  7. #6 • In order to answer this question you must think about and be able to know the indicators of the following issues: • Biodiversity (150-151) • Industrial Growth and Urban Development (143) • Pollution (152) • Limiting factors (124-127) • Climate change (157-160)

  8. #7 • It’s ok that your personal perspective is different than the one that you have been assigned. • You will need to give at least three factors that your character uses to justify their actions. Tell why the character uses these factors even though the factors may violate the Gaia theory; not take environmental unity into consideration and exploits limiting factors.

  9. Essay • Your essay should follow the rules and guidelines you have learned in your current English class. • All questions should be answered by your essay • You can have write a paragraph for each question, but what would be better, if you grouped your answers in like paragraphs. Organize the questions by topic, and then include the answers to the questions under each topic in complete and coherent sentences. • Each paragraph should be a complete paragraph; a topic sentence, the factors that support the topic sentence, and a concluding sentence that bridges into the next paragraph.
