COUNCIL/EP DECISION ON 6FP • Decision No 1513/2002/EC concerning the sixth framework programme of the European Community for research, technological development and demonstration activities, contributing to the creation of the European Research Area and to innovation (2002 to 2006) of 27.6.2002 • Establishes integrating research into technological areas of priority interest for citizens and businesses as one of the technological priorities • Defines focus around ambient intelligence systems and interactive and intelligent systems for access to and preservation of the cultural heritage

COUNCIL DECISION ON SPECIFIC PROGRAMME • Council Decision adopting a specific programme for research, technological development and demonstration: "Integrating and strengthening the European Research Area” of 30.9.2002 • Research addressing major societal challenges marked as IST research priority • Focus on "ambient intelligence" for the preservation of cultural heritage • Focus on intelligent systems for dynamic access to and preservation of tangible and intangible cultural and scientific resources.

  9. 2003-2004 WORKPROGRAMME IST • Draft version of 17.10.2002 • Strong focus on a limited set of strategic objectives that need to be addressed at a European level • Mentions strengthening social cohesion by providing efficient, intelligent and easy to use systems for cultural heritage as part of the main societal and economic challenges to be addressed • Technology-enhanced learning and access to cultural heritage considered as Strategic objective addressed in Call 1 with an Indicative Pre-allocated Budget of 65 M€

  10. 2003-2004 WORKPROGRAMME IST • Objective: To develop advanced systems and services that help improve access to Europe's cultural and scientific collections and generate new forms of cultural experiences. • Focus : Improving accessibility, visibility and recognition of the commercial value of Europe's cultural and scientific resources, by developing environments for intelligent heritage, re-creating and visualising cultural and scientific objects and sites for enhancing userexperience • Instuments : NoEs and STREPs will be the prevailing instruments for intelligent heritage

BUDGET ALLOCATION • 80% of budget pre-allocated • 20 % flexible, to be allocated after evaluation • Five groups of objectives • Strengthening leadership Marked increase (~27%) • Seizing opportunities Substantial increase (~45%) • Applied Research Same level • Infrastructures Following decision • FET Following commitment • Allocation only for the first two years: To be revised for 2005-2006 • ~2/3 of budget on new instruments (all together not per objective)
