Characteristics of totalitarian states / totalitarianism (see p. 441) • rule by single party dictatorship • has an ideology (set of beliefs) for people to follow • state comes before individual; citizens expected to obey & individual rights mean little • censorship of media • extremely nationalistic • dynamic leader  viewed as father-figure/godlike • police/military terror used to silence critics • indoctrination & propaganda  use technology to reach the masses
