About B.EN.A. • B.EN.A. is: • an International scientificorganization with the scope of preserving environment and cultures of Balkan countries. • it serves as a Balkan environmental thinking tank that goes beyond research to find scientific ways to protect Balkan region and to improve people’s lives. • B.EN.A.’s members • study and analyze interactions among • environmental factors, • economic and communities’ trend • promote strategies and institutional changes that may improve environmental and natural-resources decision making through objective and independent scientific research, studies and professional training. About B.EN.A. • The main goals of B.EN.A. are to: • examine and appraise the current problems of environmental protection on a regional, national and international basis.More specifically, B.EN.A. is concentrating upon the problems concerning the protection of people, animals and plants in the Balkan region from the harmful effects of chemicals or climatic changes, • advise the regulatory bodies of the various Balkan countriesabout decisions concerning the evaluation of the risk of chemicals and physical agents, • develop internationalcooperation on reducing transboundary pollution. Also, to engage in activities on environmental pollution, as that affects public health, • develop strategies and optionsfor the environmental protection of the Balkan rivers, lakes and wetlands, • develop the environmental quality management systemsfor the Balkan region, • develop international programsfor the restoration and the sustainable improvement of the ecological safety of cross-border regions, • plan and organize scientifically events and activitieson environmental issues. About B.EN.A.Achievements and Elaborations • We have established a continuous collaboration with the European Commission (JRC Ispra – Environmental Institute and Institute for Health and Consumer Protection). • We have developed and operated the “Friendly to the Environment Company Certification” (F.E.C.), mainly for the small and medium size companies. • We have developed the “10 INDICES FOR SUSTAINABILITY OF BALKAN COUNTRIES” (especially for the accession West Balkan countries). • We are in the procedure to operate the Balkan Institute for Environmental Research (BIER) with the financial support of the Prefecture of Florina/Greece. The main scope of BIER is to support the young researchers on various international transboundary research projects from Balkan area. • During the 3rd International B.EN.A. Conference we have established the “International Scholarships of B.EN.A.”, for young scientists. The procedure started with the first three awards for “Young Scientists Award”. The awards are named after: Theophrastus (for the 1st place), Von Humbolt (for the 2nd place), and Fresenius (for the 3rd place). Achievements and Elaborations

About B.EN.A.Achievements and Elaborations • We have started the procedure to publish a sourcebook, regarding the most polluted areas in Balkan (GREEN BOOK). • We celebrate the INTERNATIONAL DAY OF ENVIRONMENT organized by the B.EN.A. Training Center in Constanta (5th of June). • B.EN.A. established the ACADEMY of ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES, within the Academy of Sciences of Bulgaria, in Sofia. Chairman of the Organizing Committee is Prof. L. Petrov. • B.EN.A. has recently become member of the International SKILLSnet of CEDEFOP – the European Union Center for the Development of Vocational Education and Training. Balkan Environmental Association B.E.N.A. “The Balkan Local Authority Environmental Network – B.L.A.E.N.” was founded in Municipality of Katerini in March 2006, with the scientific support of B.EN.A. Activities of B.EN.A.Balkan Local Authority Environmental Network • The focal point of BLAEN is in Municipality • of Katerini, • its president is the Mayor of Katerini, • its members are Balkan Municipalities • is in close collaboration with B.EN.A. International Permanent Office of Thessaloniki. Balkan Local Authority Environmental Network (B.L.A.E.N.) BLAEN’s members work towards to regional cooperation and substantial support for a clean and healthy community environment. BLAEN has representatives in Municipalities : Albania, Bulgaria, FYR of Macedonia, Romania, Serbia and Turkey.

Europe”, has been organized, in Katerini/Greece, January 2001. • In May 18-21, 2001 B.EN.A. co-organized with Turkish Companies, an International Symposium entitled: “TREATMENT 2000”, in Istanbul/Turkey. Year 2007 • In June 14th-16th, 2007 theMetropolitan Institute for Planning and Urban Design Center in cooperation with B.EN.A. and Istanbul Greater Municipality organized the International Workshop on: “The Importance of Ecological Belts Surrounding Metropolitan Cities”,in Istanbul/Turkey.

Year 2007 • In October 25th-26th, 2007 the National Institute for Industrial Ecology – ECOIND Bucharest co-organized with B.EN.A. the International Symposium on“Environment and Industry”,in Bucharest/ Romania.

Year 2007 In the frame of the conference was organized the Round Table on Sustainable Development: Theory and Practice. The participants of the Conference were received by the Prince Aleksander and Princesses Katerine at the Royal Palace in Belgrade.

Activities of B.EN.A.Young Scientists and Young Generation • Every year, B.EN.A. together with young generationcelebrates the World Environment Day on 5th of June, it is the only secure investment for the future of Planet. • B.EN.A. in collaboration with UNESCO is planning to organize for young generation ECO-CAMPS in Balkan Region.Through these Camps young people will be actively involved in environmental education projects and they will work towards sustainable development. Young Scientists and Young Generation B.EN.A. supports young scientists research projects based on environmental protection topics.

Participation in the 7FW project (EU) “UPGRADING BLACK SEA SCENE”(2009- 2011) EU project 2009-2011 The purpose of the project is to establish scientific co operation between the stakeholders of the Black Sea, using the database warehouse which was build within the Black sea scene project (www.blackseascene.net/), providing the framework of sustainable development. The dissemination of the proposed strategies and implementation will be under the responsibility of BENA-International.

Activities of B.EN.A.Research Projects and Young Scientists In ROMANIA, during 2001-2008, B.EN.A. in collaboration with different private companies funded 143 research projects and 114 scholarships for young scientists. 2001-2008 Romania B.EN.A. and TUBORG Romaniadeveloped during2001-2008the Program“Better Environment and Life in Romania”for funding research projects and scholarships.

Activities of B.EN.A.Research Projects and Young Scientists • The Call for Scholarshipswas developed in the following disciplines: biology, ecology, chemistry, environmental protection, marine technology, coastal erosion, methods/ techniques/ methodologies for pollution control, waste/water management, etc. • category I – Postgraduate students (max. age 30 years) • category II – Young researchers (max. age 35 years) • category III – Scientists with the special contribution to the environmental activities (max. age 50 years) Scholarships

Activities of B.EN.A.Research Projects and Young Scientists The call for Research Projectswas developed in the following topics: Biodiversity and living marine resources; Integrated monitoring in the Black Sea coastal zone; Environmental tendency and risk assessment; Methods and technologies for protection and rehabilitation of the Black Sea; Integration of economic, social and environmental issues in the process of coastal zone management. Pollution control in environmental media for hot points identification, new methods/techniques development in relation with international requirements; Environmental impact/risk assessment for identification of areas, where pollution abatement, clean production or ecological reconstruction are required; Environmental technologies (drinking water, wastewater, wastes); Training and consulting for EMS (ISO 14001) and QMS (EN 45001) development and implementation for certification/accreditation.
