  2. Pangaea Alfred Wegener originated the idea of Pangaea. However, Wegener’s idea were not always accepted. They were only supported by the fact that the continents looked like they could have been shaped together, but not by actual facts. Pangaea Alfred Wegener

  3. Pangaea Pangaea means “all lands”. It had all of the contents on Earth today in it. Pangaea occurred in the Coniferous period(about 300 million years ago). Alfred Wenger was a very skilled Geologist, but he was also a skilled Astronomer. This could have related to his studies because patterns in the stars could have possibly been related to patterns on the Earth.

Pangaea • The heating and cooling of the land was being discussed during the time that Alfred Wegener introduced his Pangaea theory. • Arthur Holmes’s ideas assisted in the recognition of Wegener’s theory by telling the public that the mantle undergoes thermal convection. He had facts to back this up. He backed by the fact that “as a substance is heated, it’s density decreases and rises to the surface until it cools again”.

  5. Convergent Boundaries Convergent Boundaries are lines where two tectonic plates move toward each other, causing a collision. Convergent boundaries can cause many disasters like Earthquakes, Volcanoes, mountains, Trenches, Mud/landslides and even volcanic islands.

  6. Convergent Boundaries • An example of a convergent boundary is located at the Ring Of Fire. • The continental plates that are involved in this boundary are at the Pacific Plate.

  7. Earthquakes • Earthquakes are a type of a natural disaster that is caused by the cracking or shifting of large rocks or plates. There are so many earthquakes that happen each year. There were an estimated 24,550 earthquakes in 2008.

  8. Volcanoes • Volcanoes are vents in the earth’s crusts that lava, steam, and ashes are taken out from the earth. There are 253 known volcanoes in the United States. Volcanoes can form by lava coming out of the earth. This lava will eventually make a mountain. This “mountain” is a volcano.

  9. Trenches • Trenches are areas in the ground with large holes. They are made naturally, or they can be dug up. Trenches can be as short as 6 inches or they can be 6 feet or deeper. These are caused when two plates hit each other. The paltes can possibly break off a large portion of rock, causing a trench.

  10. Mountains • Mountains are very large hills formed when two plates are pushed together. One of the plates will sink benith the other one, and it will force the plate on top of it to move up. This will create a mountain.

  11. Landslides • Landslides are when pieces of rock or dirt fall from a high point, such as a hill. Landslides are caused by gravity pulling on a hill. The gravity will force the dirt and rocks to fall down.

  12. Mudslides • Mudslides occur when hills with mud on them get too much rain water on them. This causes the mud to rush down the hill. It is more likley for this to happen if the hill does not have grass or plants on it.

  13. Divergent Boundaries • A Divergent Boundary is a line between two plates that are moving away from each other. • Some hazards that are characteristic of a divergent boundary include Earthquakes, Volcanoes, Trenches and they can create Rift Valleys. • The mid- atlantic ridge is an example of a divergent boundary. Some continental plates that are associated with this are the Eurasian plate and the North American Plate.

  14. Transform Boundaries • Transform Boundaries are when two plates slide against each other. • This can create huge amounts of energy. This energy build up can sometimes create Volcanoes, Trenches and mudslides. They will usually create massive earthquakes. • They are found in oceans. The plates associated with these faults could include the North American Plate and the Eurasian pate
