  2. Election of 1828 • Event: Jackson’s Election – Age of the “common man” • Jackson was a Westerner, born outside the upper classes of society • Importance: Supporters were the “common people” – laborers, farmers, frontiersmen, the average American

  3. “Jacksonian Democracy” • Event: Politics become an activity of ordinary citizens • Importance: End of property requirements, “spoils system,” new forms of campaigning-dinners, rallies, public meetings

  4. Indian Removal Act • Event: relocation of Native Americans by the government • Importance: Gave the government the power to relocate the Native Americans to west of the Mississippi River. The government would provide them with money, rifles and provisions for one year • Cherokees take case to the supreme Court – Worcester v. Georgia – courts ruled in favor of the Cherokee – but they were forced to move in 1837

  5. Trail of Tears • Event: Forced removal of the Cherokee • Importance: Thousands of Cherokee die on the march to Indian Territory (25%) which is present day Oklahoma

  6. Nullification Crises • Event: Tariff of 1828 (Tariff of Abominations) and Tariff of 1832 • Importance: Congress passes a higher tariff in 1828. John C. Calhoun of South Carolina feels a state should have the right to nullify federal laws they feel are unconstitutional. The tariff is slightly lowered in 1832 but South Carolina voids the tariff and threatens to secede • Force Bill is passed – gives President Jackson the right to use military force against South Carolina - showing he will use force to Preserve the Union South Carolina backs down

  7. War on the Bank • Event: Jackson despises the bank of the United States • Importance: Jackson felt it favored the rich in the North. He withdrew government funds and refused to renew the charter

More on Jackson • Earned fame from the Battle of New Orleans • Nickname “Old Hickory” • Believed in rewarding his supporters with government office – “Spoils System” • Democratic Republican party split – Supporters of Jackson called themselves ‘Democrats’ his opponents called themselves ‘Whigs’
