  1. Thoughts From the Corner Office A Message from Dean J.B. Kurish The big news from the MBA Program Office is the upcoming Goizueta and NYSE Euronext co-sponsored Leadership Summit here at the school September 2, 2009. Those of you in the MBA10 class will remember me talking about this opportunity in a very general manner. In addition to Duncan Niederauer, CEO of NYSE Euronext, and Dean Larry, the panel will include two CEOs (Daniel P. Amos of AFLAC and Frank Blake of Home Depot), the President and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta (Dennis Lockhart), United States Senator Saxby Chambliss, and CNN Business Correspondent Susan Lisovicz as moderator. The day will be an immense learning opportunity for you and an outstanding branding moment for the school as we expect media coverage in local, regional, national and international markets. All full-time MBAs are expected to attend the panel discussion in the Schwartz Center from 11:15am – 1:00pm. As part of Lead Week, the class of 2010 will spend time with Duncan Niederauer in a leadership-focused Q&A session in the Auditorium prior to the panel. This event illustrates the importance of reaching out to people in your professional and personal networks. One of the first things I did after being named Associate Dean was to reach out to Duncan to get him engaged with the school. That initial meeting started a dialog that resulted in this unprecedented opportunity for Goizueta Business School. It is an honor and a privilege to have a full day with Duncan and to partner Goizueta with NYSE Euronext on a co-branded panel event. This far exceeds what I hoped might result from my summer 2008 meeting with him. This event has a very personal side to it for me. Duncan is not only one of our most successful alumni from Goizueta, but he is also a colleague and friend to my wife and me. I ask all of us as a community to come together to make the most of this learning and marketing opportunity for the school. This is a truly reputational building moment for us. Admissions Announcements An Overview of Admission Happenings The MBA Admissions Office has had a busy and productive summer. In May we welcomed an outstanding group of 47 One Year MBAs to Goizueta. And, just a few weeks ago, our First Years began their Orientation and Leadership programs. These classes represent an extremely talented group of individuals with a diversity of work and life experiences that will add so much to our community. We look forward to our returning Second Years getting to know them! Each summer we develop our new recruiting materials for the coming year and plan our fall recruiting schedule. Later this month you will receive a copy of our newest MBA Viewbook. Between now and January 2010, our MBA Admissions team will participate in almost 50 different MBA recruiting events in the United States and abroad. Our Worldwide Recruiting Schedule can be found at: http://www.goizueta.emory.edu/degree/fulltimemba/worldwide_recruiting.html We hope that you will forward this link to friends whom you believe would be good additions to Goizueta . GoizuetaAmbassadors are still needed to support Super Saturday events! The application deadline has been extended to August 21st. Congratulations to the One Year Ambassador Chair, Michael Thompson. .................Continued on Page 4

  3. Getting to Know the GBA A Message from the GBA President Welcome to the Goizueta Business School! My name is Jeff Davis and I am the Graduate Business Association (GBA) President. On behalf of the GBA, I would like to officially welcome the Class of 2011 and the one-years. Also, I would like to welcome back the Class of 2010. The GBA serves as the voice of the student body. The GBA has 12 Executive Council members and we provide leadership to the student clubs. We also lead many social events throughout the year such as “Thursday Night Kegs” and semi-formal. We are very excited to have you as a part of the community! Speaking of community, if I were to take a poll, many of you would agree that the Emory community was a key driver in your decision to attend the Goizueta Business School. However, when we think of community it is often referenced in the receiving perspective. What can alumni help me out with? What can the companies do for me? I challenge you to look at community from a different perspective this upcoming year. As an integral part of the community, ask yourself what can I do? Because of the challenges of the economy, now is the time more than ever to have the hunger and drive to constantly challenge yourself and to work outside of your comfort zone whether in the classroom or during the job search. All of us sacrificed many things to come back to school, careers and money, just to name a couple of things. Therefore, I challenge you to make the best of this opportunity. By doing so, you will be able to pursue your dreams and ambitions, while leaving a positive mark on the Goizueta community. I truly look forward to getting to know and work with each of you over the upcoming year. Know that the GBA is a resource for you. I look forward to seeing all of you in September. 4. Goizueta Traditions A Highlight of Goizueta Traditions Every newsletter, we’ll highlight Goizueta traditions to provide a background on various programs throughout the year and to give us a change to get excited about upcoming events! Kegs: Kegs has become an integral part of the Goizueta community and provides a way for the Goizueta family to come together each week. Thursday Kegs isn’t about drinking; it’s about socialization, the opportunity to see classmates from other sections and classes, and a chance to unwind from a long week This Thursday ritual also provides a networking opportunity, as many Kegs will be company sponsored, with representatives onsite. Plenty of food, music, and non-alcoholic drinks will also be provided at Kegs. Kegs begins every Thursday after class between 4:30 and 5pm. Thursday Kegs kick off the week of August 31st-watch the conferences for more details! A special thanks to Ezequiel Zamora who helped organize an informal kegs for the first years! Student Spotlight: GBFP Developing Business Leaders through Nonprofit Board Service Are you interested in learning more about serving on a non-profit board? Would you like to volunteer time and learn more about a nonprofit in the Atlanta area? Join Goizueta Board Fellows! Come to the Goizueta Board Fellows Introductory Meeting on September 22. The Goizueta Board Fellows Program (GBFP) matches MBA students with Atlanta area nonprofit organizations. Students complete basic board training and then apply their skills as non-voting board members participating in regular board meetings, relevant subcommittee meetings, direct service opportunities and project based work throughout the academic year. A win-win partnership, nonprofits provide students insight into board governance and nonprofit management structures while students benefit nonprofits by brining business skills and fresh ideas to help strengthen community efforts. Past nonprofit program participants include: Atlanta Humane Society, Dad's Garage Theatre Company, Junior Achievement of Georgia, and United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta.
