  2. WITH A PARTNER, DISCUSS: • Do you agree with the Giver that, “Life here is so predictable, so orderly, so painless”? • Do you agree with Jonas that, “We really have to protect people from wrong choices”? • Are these justifications for the Community? ** You will share for your partner **

  3. TOPIC: A JUST SOCIETY IS ONE IN WHICH EVERYONE IS THE SAME

  4. HOW TO MAKE YOUR POINT • Use examples from the text, your own life, and history • Each group will get a packet with starter arguments and ideas • Potential topics to talk about: • Problems or positives in Jonas’s society • Problems or positives in public school • Genocide, marriage equality, civil rights, women’s lib, etc.

  5. FOUR ROLES • SPEECH WRITER (2) • PRESENTER (2) • RESEARCH DIRECTOR (2) • TASKMASTER (2)

SPEECH WRITER PRESENTER Deliver your team’s position clearly and confidently Speak expressively and with gusto Persuade your audience • Write the speeches for the presenters • Ensure that everything is grammatically correct and has good flow • Organize speeches for clarity and maximum persuasion

Research Director Task Master Keep everyone in the group motivated and working Ensure that everyone has some responsibility Give feedback to the other group members on their progress • Organize research from group members • Delegate specific websites/tasks to specific team members • Act as the taskmaster – keep everyone on task and researching

  8. GRADING You and your group will be graded on my observations of your work, your final speeches, and an individual reflection. 75 points = observation and speeches 25 points = individual reflection

  9. YOUR GROUP WILL NEED: • Role descriptions • Laptops or computers • A google doc or Edmodo group page
