  5. We are going to see how radicals are used in sailing.

  6. Daniel and Clair are sailing on a sailboat. They find the hull speed to be 10 nautical miles per hour. What is the length of the sailboat’s waterline? We can use a radical equation to solve this problem.

  7. Information we need: • Formula-- • Hull speed (h)—the fastest speed that a sailboat can travel. • Waterline length (l)—the length of the line made by the water’s edge when the boat is full.

  8. Things we need to ask ourselves: • What do we need to isolate to solve the equation? • How can we isolate it? • How can we remove the radical? We will look at this question a little later.
