Heards Ferry Elementary • Mission • Heards Ferry Elementary School’s mission is to challenge and support all students to reach their highest potential. • VISION • The vision of Heards Ferry as a member of the Riverwood International Cluster is to deliver a challenging curriculum that gives all students the tools needed to be successful, contributing members of our nation and the world. • WE BELIEVE • All students solve problems in different ways and at different rates. • In an open environment where communication and respect are valued by all stakeholders. • In a student centered environment that develops global thinkers and promotes independence. • That learning is a continual process of risk taking and reevaluation. • MOTTO • “Teaching students how to think, not what to think.” • STRATEGIC PLAN LONG-TERM OUTCOMES • Improve student achievement at the highest level. • Increase students’ inquiry based learning. • Increase student ownership of learning.

  4. A Little About Me • I grew up on a farm in Woodstock, Georgia. • I have a younger sister. • I graduated from Kennesaw State University with my B.S. in ECE. • I have been teaching for 7 years. I taught Pre-K for 2 and kindergarten for 5. • I have been married for 5 years, and have a 1 year old little boy. • I love being outside, arts and crafts, baby snuggles, and anything about space!

  5. Attendance • School hours are from 7:40-2:20. • It is important that students are here on time every day. • If your child is absent, please send in a written note or doctor’s note for an excused absence.

Balanced Literacy • Balanced literacy is a comprehensive program within reading and has different components. • Modeled (Extended Text)-Read Aloud • Shared Reading-Students can see and interact with text • Guided Reading • Takes place in small groups • Students read at instructional reading level • Independent Reading • Takes place during Guided Reading • Students read at independent reading level

  15. “…students become powerful readers and writers who read and write for real reasons - to advocate for themselves and others, to deepen their own and others’ knowledge, to illuminate the lives they live and the world they are a part of.” Our work aims to prepare kids for any reading and writing task they will face or set themselves, to turn them into life-long, confident readers and writers who display agency and independence in their future endeavors.  The Reading & Writing Project Teacher’s College, Columbia University

  16. Reader’s workshop is a literature based program where students read and respond to meaningful text while focusing on a reading skill. Students get to choose what they read and how they implement the skill. I deliver a short mini-lesson on a comprehension skill. Then, students practice the skill during independent reading time. They focus on the skill while reading and responding to their text to help them make a connection with the concept taught.

  17. Writer’s workshop is an environment where students can acquire the skills and confidence to see themselves as writers. Student’s are put in charge and are actively involved in creating their own texts. The writing workshop puts students on the spot and makes them responsible for their writing. I deliver instruction on a specific writing technique during a brief mini-lesson. Then, students practice the technique during independent writing time. We write every day and student’s determine the subject they write about within the genre’s.

Grades • Home Access Center • If there is a sibling in grades 2-5 you can use the password you already have for older child to access HAC for the K or 1st grader.  If not, you will need to go to the office to show ID and receive log-in information. • 0=Unsatisfactory (U) 69% and below • 1=Needs Improvement (N) 70%-79% • 2=Satisfactory(S) 80%-100% • Report Cards- 4 times a year (October, January, March, May)

  22. GKIDS GKIDS is the Georgia Kindergarten Inventory of Developing Skills. Your child will have ongoing formative assessments through the use of GKIDS and instruction will be enriched or reinforced. Groupings are flexible and will be based on student need. You will be getting reports sent home periodically. Scores are reported as: ND- Not demonstrated EM- Emerging PR- Progressing ME- Meets EX- Exceeds

  23. Fluency Assessment • Fontas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System (BAS). • Given 3 times a year • This determines their reading level on a scale from A-Z. • Independent and Instructional levels • Students should leave kindergarten reading on a level D instructional level and level C independent reading level.

Math Unit Assessments • Before each math unit, we pre-assess students to inform our instruction in small groups and independent learning centers. • After each math unit, we will assess students to see if they have mastered all standards. • Math Units: • Counting, Shapes, comparing numbers, measuring, addition/subtraction

Digital Citizenship • Heards Ferry’s vision is to empower ALL students to behave safely and participate responsibly with technology.  • Students will use their device for educational purposes only and be sure to be safe and appropriate while online.   •   They will listen to their head and heart and  protect private information and respect themselves and others while online.  • Lastly, they will stand up and say NO to cyberbullying!

  27. Birthdays *You can bring in a store bought, bite sized birthday treat to share with the class. *You can serve the treat towards the end of lunch time, which is 10:30-11:00. Please make sure you don’t purchase anything with peanuts.

Volunteers • All volunteers must go through a mandatory • Volunteer training through Fulton county. • How do I become a volunteer?1.Register at the Fulton County Schools Volunteer Page.2.Complete the mandatory online training.3.Complete the mandatory online volunteer application.4.Wait for a confirmation email from Fulton County Schools. THIS CAN TAKE UP TO 48 HOURS5.Visit the school and begin volunteering.

  32. Homework • Your child will work on a • choice board for the month. • Students can choose activity based on level. • Some choices will be harder than others. • Will focus on Reading, Writing, and Math.
