  1. Blog 2: HeraldryAndCrests.com WHAT IS A COAT OF ARMS? A coat of arms is actually something that you see almost every day. As you send your children to school, you see it on their uniforms. As you visit some big corporate firm of ancient origins, you see it on their letterheads. A coat of arms is a symbol or design of heraldic background, associated with the achievements of a family, person corporation or state. Coat of arms symbols have many components. These symbols consist of a motto, a crest, a helm, a torse, an escutcheon, an order and an alternative motto. Supporters of the coat of arms are depicted on both sides of the escutcheon. To the top left, a Dexter is depicted while on the top right, a sinister. These are the conventional elements of an achievement. If one is to look at new world herald and do a coat of arms search, one would find a good example in the Great Seal of The United States. Looking closely at it would reveal that it is actually an eagle carrying symbols of war and peace on the left and the right hand sides respectively. In its beak it carries the motto, which says, “E Pluribus Unum”. The next time you help your children get ready for school, pay attention to the symbols on their uniforms. You will find a coat of arms somewhere on there. The same applies to all the universities and schools for higher education. Coat of arms symbols and meanings are more obvious today than they were in old times.
