  1. Now that you have heard from both sides… Which side do you agree with? Using the RACE method, respond to the following question: Do you believe free streaming services are killing the music industry, or are they helping the music industry? Be sure to provide evidence from both sides to support your argument. • In a two paragraph (8-10 sentences each) response, state your claim and support it with information that you learned from your research, as well as from the philosophical chairs. Make sure to address the counterclaim in your response! *Tip: You should write your introduction, claim (point of view), and supporting evidence in paragraph one, and then write your counterclaim, rebuttal, and conclusion in paragraph two.

  2. What is a counterargument? • It is when you recognize the other side of the debate in order to strengthen your own argument.

  3. What is a rebuttal? • This is when you say why the counterargument is wrong.

  4. There’s often confusion between rebut and refute and both words may be misused when deny is most appropriate. It’s true that they all have to do with negation, but that’s where the similarity ends. • To deny a statement is simply that. If I say ‘all dogs are grey’, then if you deny or contradict that statement all you have to do is say: ‘No, they’re not.’ • However, if you wanted to rebut my statement, you would have to provide a well thought out and reasoned argument that suggests that I might be wrong. This is used in debates, where speakers present evidence that supports a counterargument. • In order to refute my statement about dogs, you would have to prove it wrong, perhaps by showing me a dog of a different color.

  5. A counterargument should be expressed thoroughly and fairly. • Do not just write a quick sentence and then immediately rebut it. Give reasons why someone might actually hold that view. A few sentences or a whole paragraph is not an unreasonable amount of space to give to the counterargument.

  6. SENTENCE STARTERSUse the following phrases to help you get started writing counterarguments and rebuttals. Counterargument Sentence Starters • Some people might say… • Some will agree… • Those on the other side of the issue may say that… • While it’s true that…but • There is some truth to the argument that…however • It is true that…however • It may be true that…but • Even if… • They claim that… but in fact Rebuttal Sentence Starters • That is not the case. As we see (bring up new evidence)… • While this may be the case, (my claim) is still true because… • That point is true, but it is unimportant because… • Nevertheless, my point still stands because…
