  1. Starting Afresh Three significant activities Joshua 4:19-5:12 The LORD said to …….

  2. The stones from Jordan • What God wanted to happen Josh 4:1-3 … the Lord said to Joshua, “Choose twelve men … one from each tribe,… take up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan,… Josh 4:20 And Joshua set up at Gilgal the twelve stones they had taken out of the Jordan. • Why God wanted this done Josh 4:21 He said to the Israelites, “In the future when your descendants ask their parents, ‘What do these stones mean?’ 22 tell them, ‘Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground.’ • What God wanted to teach people Josh 4:24a He did this so that all the peoples of the earth might know that the hand of the Lord is powerful (Josh 5:3:1) Josh 4:24b and so that you might always fear the Lord your God.” (Josh 3:10)

  3. The circumcision contract • What God wanted to happen in Abraham’s time Gen17:1 … the Lord appeared to himand said, “I am God Almighty; walk before me faithfully and be blameless. Gen 17:10a This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you, the covenant you are to keep…….. • Why God wanted to make this contract Gen 17:6 I will make you very fruitful; … 7 I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you … to be your God and the God of your descendants after you. 8 The whole land of Canaan, where you now reside as a foreigner, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants… • How God wanted Israel’s families to ‘sign’ the contract Gen 17:11 You are to undergo circumcision, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and you.

  4. The circumcision contract • God had Joshua circumcise the next generation Josh 5:2 At that time the Lord said to Joshua, “Make flint knives and circumcise the Israelites again.” • What God wanted to teach the people • Circumcision is only the symbol of an inner commitment Deut 30:6 The Lord your God will circumcise your hearts and the hearts of your descendants, so that you may love him with all your heart and with all your soul, and live. • When God’s people don’t trust and obey, it reflects on his character Josh 5:9 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.” • What is the Christian’s circumcision ceremony? Col 2:11 ….you were circumcised by Christ, 12 having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.

  5. The Passover Festival • What God wanted to happen in Egypt Ex 12:1 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in Egypt, …3 Tell the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of this month each man is to take a lamb for his family,…. Ex 12:6 Take care of them until the fourteenth day of the month,…. slaughter them at twilight. 7 Then they are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the doorframes of the houses where they eat the lambs. …… • Why God wanted this done Ex 12:13 The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are, and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt. Ex 12:14 “This is a day you are to commemorate; for the generations to come you shall celebrate it as a festival to the Lord—a lasting ordinance.

  6. The Passover Festival • Joshua and the people celebrated the Passover Festival Josh 5:10 On the evening of the fourteenth day of the month, while camped at Gilgal on the plains of Jericho, the Israelites celebrated the Passover. • What God wanted to teach the people • Protection depended on the blood from the sacrifice of an innocent lamb Ex 12:26 And when your children ask you, ‘What does this ceremony mean to you?’ 27 then tell them, ‘It is the Passover sacrifice to the Lord, who passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt and spared our homes when he struck down the Egyptians.’” • What is the Christian’s Passover Festival? 1 Cor 11:23…The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
