  1. Micro Fiction! Like regular fiction, but micro.

  2. What is micro fiction? • A style of fictional writing of extreme brevity. • Also called: sudden fiction, microfiction, micro-story, short short, postcard fiction, prosetry, shortshort story, flash fiction, nanofiction. • There aren’t many hard and fast rules to micro fiction and there are several sub-categories. • Flash Fiction: 1000 words or less. • 55 Fiction: Exactly 55 words. • Drabble: Exactly 100 words. • Nanofiction: 55 words, complete plot and at least one developed character.

  3. Here are some examples: “Classified” by Ernest Hemingway For sale: baby shoes, never worn. Supposedly, this story came about as a bet amongst Hemingway and some fellow writers. He bet them he could write a 6 word short story. According to legend, he won the bet. No one is sure if he really wrote it, but in any case it is a good example of micro fiction.

  4. “High Tide” by Robert Scotellaro The boy, a psychic phenom, looked up from his PlayStation with a worried look. He said: “If all the fish in the ocean farted at once, could it cause a tidal wave?” His parents glanced at each other, then suddenly bolted, spilling their drinks. Outside a rumbling, like a million locomotives, rattled their seaside cottage.

  5. “No Moon” There was no moon. No streetlights. Rarely a passing car. A few houses, but none with lights on at this sort of time. He hid in the bushes, dressed from head to toe in black. He could make out a figure approaching. Hear footfalls on the pavement. It was her. She had no torch this time. He had the element of surprise. As she neared, he pulled the balaclave down, covering the last few inches of white skin, and stealthily emerged from the bushes. The sun dazzled him. He fell. She ran. Damn. This would’ve worked better at night.

  6. “Another Planet” by Phil Gardner The craft flew through space at warp speed, its destination: Mars. Alien experiments had resulted in an army of cyborgs: robotic bodies with organic brains, each hellbent on the destruction of Earth. Mankind’s salvation lay in the hands of just one man: Captain Ben, the Space Corp’s finest. But time was running out. Impatiently, he armed the defensive shields and ordered the crew to fire up the thrusters. An urgent voice cam from below the decks. “Benjy, your bacon and eggs are ready!” Benjydroped the paper mache spaceship, swept the robots into the toy box, and ran downstairs for breakfast.

  7. Relax (an example of Drabble) Remembering what my therapist told me to do in times of stress, I close my eyes and try to relax. "Think positively," she'd say. "Count your blessings and that will put things into perspective." So, I think of my wonderful wife, my great kids, the beautiful house we've got paid off, the thriving business I've built from the ground up... Ground?Up? I open my eyes, and I see the ground is still there, approaching just as rapidly as it was before I spaced out with the happy-sappy stuff. I tug on the cord for the reserve chute again, harder.

  8. Assignment! • Try writing some micro fiction! • You can try one of the specific styles, you go with more of the general really short story vibe or you can make a ridiculous writing bet with someone in class. • We will share these in class TODAY, so get to work!
