  2. 2004 Accomplishments • Design Adequacy of Safety SSC’s (Backfit) – published recommendation on this DNFSB issue. • Engineering Performance Metrics – published report • Design Basis Threat – completed review of engineering approaches • Third-party Financed Facilities – held informational telecon • Engineering Procedure Sets – collected & shared among members • Value Management (Value Engineering) – initiated subgroup based on member interest and EFCOG Board interest • 4 WG meetings – 1 @ Yucca Mtn, 1 @ Oak Ridge, 2 via telecon

Engineering Practices Subgroups • Fire Protection – very active, Best Practices, Benchmarking, integrated comments on draft orders and standards • Configuration Management – refocused this year with specific tasking, new chair, ongoing effort on CM approach for D&D • Engineering Standards – re-evaluated need for group - decided to retain, reenergize, and set goals • Value Management – new subgroup in formation

  4. Ongoing Initiatives • HEPA Filter Testing – standards/acceptance criteria (in cooperation with ISM Working Group initiative) • Criteria for Engineering Involvement in Maintenance/Construction • Value Management – facilitate promotional site visits by DOE Sponsor • Maintaining & updating Subject Matter Expert listing

  5. New Activities & Goals • Excavation/Penetration Permitting – benchmark contractor practices • Drawing Management • Minimum Engineering for Non-Nuclear Work • Human Performance Engineering • Explore potential for Engineering Workshop (1-2 years out) • Refocus Engineering Standards subgroup

  6. Upcoming Meetings • January 19, 2005 Winter Telecon – 3:00 PM EDT • April 19-20, 2005 Spring Meeting – Albuquerque • July 20, 2005 Summer Telecon – 3:00 PM EDT (tentative) • October 18-19, 2005 Fall Meeting – Washington, DC (tentative)

  7. Sponsors (changes occurring) • NNSA: Jay McDonald – active sponsor, no change • EM: Larry Bailey – replacing Jim Fiore who is on assignment • OECM: Thad Konopniki replaced Jim Rispoli in Spring ‘04, but has since moved to NNSA – consulting with Rispoli on replacement • Met with McDonald and Bailey prior to this meeting • Sponsor interests vary, but consistent with mission and consistent with diverse member interests

  8. SME Mentoring • Identified EFCOG recommendation on evaluating “Design Adequacy of Safety SSC’s (Backfit)” as candidate for SME Mentoring • Solicited volunteer for SME duty (Ken Keith, BWXT Y-12) • Have not formalized any further actions yet
