  1. Welcome Parents! 2nd Quarter Parent Meeting November 2, 2010

What are we learning?2nd Quarter Goals and Objectives • Science– Rocks and Minerals • Literacy – Main idea and details, summarizing, comparing and contrasting (Fiction and Nonfiction), sequencing, capitalization and punctuation rules, spelling patterns, journaling, narrative writing, AR • Math – Division (basic facts and how it is related to multiplication, divisibility rules, estimation, 3-digits by 2-digits, division of larger numbers with a calculator), Mathematical Properties, Length Measurement, Area and Perimeter, Time, Capacity, Mass, and Converting Measurements • Social Studies – Native Americans, Explorers and Settlers in NC, NC Lighthouses, and Pirates

Math – 69 % proficient multiplication fluency median, mode, range, problem solving Reading – 79 % proficient critical thinking According to our school system: scores of at least a 70% on EOQ equate to passing scores on EOGs. http://www.buildatest.com/ We will work in small groups to provide remediation strategies for students who scored below a 70%. Quarterly Test Results

  4. STAR – Measures mostly vocabulary – helps determine independent and instructional reading levels Students will take STAR tests at the end of each quarter. This will show their growth in reading during the quarter. A parent report will be sent home in report cards. AR - Students take tests after reading a book. Students should choose books on their AR level (color and book level) Work towards 85% correct Points based on reading level. Prizes awarded at end of quarter for students meeting all 3 goals. New goal summaries will be sent home next week with report cards. Students already have new bookmarks. Accelerated Reader (AR) and STAR

  5. How Can I Help/Motivate My Child? • Set up a routine and stick to it! Elementary students need structure and consistency. Set a specific homework time and spot. • Allow students to take ownership of their work. Allow them to do their work independently – provide assistance when needed. Praise them for a job well done. • Help them set realistic goals and create action plans – help them follow through. • Take an interest in what they are learning in school – extend that learning to family time.

  6. Let’s Work Together • Please continue to encourage your student to always do their best work. • Please continue to encourage your student to pay close attention and to listen carefully. • Check with your student about supply levels – they may need to replenish their paper/pencil supply. • Remember – Blue folders come home each Tuesday. Three progress reports are sent out a quarter via email. Please sign the Parent Communication Log when you receive the email – do not sign if you don’t get a report – please let me know if you do not receive a report.

  7. Union Cross Science Fair10-11 • The Science Fair will be held in January. • We will conduct a class project to enter in the Science Fair • –Projects are open to individual students and are OPTIONAL. • Students who chose to do a project will be allowed to present to the class. Their project will be graded and count as an extra credit science quiz grade. • No models – students should have a question to answer. • Info packets will be available soon – accessible online. • Ask if you have questions or need guidance on a project idea!

Upcoming Events • Nov. 4th – Skate Night and CiCi’s Pizza Night • Nov. 9th – Report Cards go home • Nov. 11th – No School – Veterans Day • Nov. 12th – School Pictures, Gr.3-5 Popcorn Party, Family Portraits • Nov. 13th – Family Portraits • Nov. 16th – Literacy Night and Family Night at the Book Fair • Nov. 19th – Goodies for Grands • Nov. 23rd – Native American Powwow, Harvest Luncheon(?) • Nov. 24th-26th – No School – Thanksgiving Holiday • Dec. 2nd – Skate Night and CiCi’s Pizza Night • Dec. 6th – 10th – PTA Holiday Shop • Dec. 14th – PTA Meeting and 4th Grade Program • Dec. 17th – Winter Party • Dec. 21st-Jan. 4th – No School – Winter Break • Jan. 14th – 18th – 2nd Quarter EOQ testing • Jan. 20th – Last day of 2nd Quarter – All AR goals to be met
