Telemarketing Healthcare Scams • New Medicare Card Scam:Claim they are from Medicare issuing new cards. • Medicare’s Redesigned Summary Notice: Asking for a home visit to discuss new details of the MSN’s. • Durable Medical Equipment/Diabetic Supplies: “Free” diabetic supplies and medical equipment. • Affordable Care Act Insurance: “New insurance opportunities from the Federal Government …”

How to Spot Telemarketing Scams • Caller says they are from a well-known organization. • Promises something for free, then asks for money, bank account, credit card, social security or Medicare number • Scammers may even have your billing information and are trying to get verification so they can say the charge was approved.

  7. A few red flags to help you spot telemarketing scams: • "You've been specially selected." (for this offer) • "You'll get a free bonus if you buy our product.“ • "You've won one of five valuable prizes.“ • "You've won big money in a foreign lottery.“ If you hear a line that sounds like this,say "no, thank you," hang up, and file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission ( More )

Western Union/MoneyGram/ Green Dot MoneyPaks • Family Emergency Scams: Scammers may pose as relatives or friends calling for help and need money wired to them. • Grandparent Scam: Caller may pose as the grandchild saying they are in trouble and need money quickly. • The Prize Promotion Scam: “You’ve won a prize!” Wire some money to cover processing and your prize will be delivered.

Don’t wire money or provide prepaid card information: • To a stranger • To someone claiming to be a relative in crisis • When a money transfer/prepaid card is the only acceptable form of payment • When you are asked to deposit a check and wire some of the money back

Tips to Help Keep Your Identity Safe • Examine your wallet and ask yourself if you need to carry all the pieces of identification in it. • When someone asks for your Social Security number, ask why they need it. • Use a password to protect your cell phone, if the phone has that capability. • Encrypt your home wireless network. • Avoid clicking on attachments or links contained in any unsolicited emails; don’t respond to unsolicited emails.
