AUQA’s report of an audit of UniSA What is AUQA? • the Australian Universities Quality Agency—an independent national body established in 2000 • engaged in a 5 year exercise to audit all universities in Australia—first cycle is about half way complete • audit visit to UniSA in 2004 Why is the audit report important? • major, public assessment of the University • based on a detailed and thorough examination of aspects of our operation on and offshore • findings reported in the national and higher education press • we must act on its findings

AUQA findings An Audit report… • quite detailed, typically around 40-60 pages long • standard format, often in same structure as an institution’s performance portfolio • findings include: • Commendations—for areas of good practice • Affirmations—areas UniSA has identified for improvement and is currently working on • Recommendations—areas for improvement

  4. Commendations UniSA received 16 commendations—these were for substantial and central parts of our operation. Included among them: • governance and managementUniSA is a well managed University with the management group providing strong leadership (Audit report page 12)the far-reaching aspirations of the University and its ability as an organisation to consistently move towards them, is notable (Audit report page 3) • program and course quality assuranceAUQA commends UniSA for its thorough system of course and program evaluation and review (Audit report page 23)

Commendations…continued • transnational operations and international student servicesthe University has a strong and sophisticated transnational education organisation (Audit report page 29)throughout the international student’s lifecycle from recruitment to graduation UniSA is providing excellent information and support services (Audit report page 26) • technological capabilityAUQA commends UniSA for its ability to identify and implement technological solutions that support its campuses and programs, both within Australia and overseas (Audit report page 49) • and many more…

  6. Affirmations & Recommendations • AUQA also identified areas where improvement is already in hand (affirmations)… or that will enhance our significant achievements (recommendations) including: • continuing to develop Graduate Qualities • developing a conceptual and strategic planning framework for community engagement • improving market research for new programs and stakeholder input to program evaluation • enhancing aspects of student-centred learning • investigating a wider range of outcome indicators

  7. Conclusions • UniSA can be proud and pleased with the results of the audit • Publication of the report gives recognition for our efforts • Findings can now be considered as part of our normal review and planning processes
