  3. INNOVATIVE OPTION FOR HERNIA !! • Pune is a fast growing and rapidly urbanizing city. It has many of the world class facilities. May it be sports or healthcare, one can easily find latest of technology and services available in Pune • For healthcare, there are hospitals and clinics of all types – international, national and local/domestic. Even ayurvedic treatment centers exist in the city and they too have their own clientele to serve

  4. INNOVATIVE OPTION FOR HERNIA !! • There are many hospitals and private clinics in Pune, which are capable of treating hernia. However, considering the chances of hernia to reoccur, it is always advisable to select the best of the treatments available from the best of the surgeons or doctors • it is always recommended to visit a medical expert or your family doctor, who will be better able to diagnose your problem and provide appropriate solution.

  5. Hernia? A hernia is a sac formation due to weakness or tear in abdominal muscles. A hernia occurs when the contents of a body cavity bulge out of the area where they are normally contained. These contents, usually portions of intestine or abdominal fatty tissue, are enclosed in the thin membrane that naturally lines the inside of the cavity. Any activity that increases intra-abdominal pressure can worsen a hernia : examples of such activities are lifting weights, coughing or even straining to have a bowel movement.

  6. Types of Hernia 1) Umbilical Hernia - Congenital umbilical hernia is a congenital malformation, common in infants of African descent. Among adults, it is three times more common in women than in men; among children, the ratio is roughly equal. An acquired umbilical hernia directly results from increased intra-abdominal pressure caused by obesity, heavy lifting, a long history of coughing, or multiple pregnancies.

  7. Types of Hernia 2 ) Epigastric Hernia- An epigastric hernia is a type of hernia which may develop in the epigastrium (upper, central part of the abdomen). Epigastric hernias usually appear in adults. Unlike the benign diastasis recti, epigastric hernia may trap fat and other tissues inside the opening of the hernia, causing pain and tissue damage.

  8. The situation can be best explained by imagining a hollow sphere with a hole. Now, think of blowing a balloon inside the sphere. A part of the balloon will bulge out of the hole and may get strangulated if more pressure is exerted. The same is the situation in case of hernia too. Its treatment can be done in two ways – pushing the bulge back inside (for reducible hernia) or surgery (for non-reducible hernia). Some of the prominently followed treatment techniques and available in most of the hernia treatment facilities are listed in further slides:

  9. 3D Mesh repair for Hernia Hernia is a medical problem caused due development of a bulge due to protrusion of an organ through a normal or abnormal opening in the walls of the muscular layer enclosing it. In common cases, a sac is formed by peritoneum. This sac then protrudes through the weak opening in the fascia. Peritoneum is the layer lining the abdominal cavity. Fascia is the strong layer lining the abdominal walls.

  10. Treatment Depending on the type of hernia and its seriousness, your doctor may advice you to go for surgery. In surgery, the sac is generally pushed back and the weak muscles are patched up or holes are plugged in. A cloth patch may be used for the purpose. However, with the new medical technology, and devices coming up, there are many options for patching up the weak muscles.

  11. 3D Mesh Repair for Hernia As the name suggests, 3D mesh is a pre-formed three dimensional device made of an on-lay mesh. This on-lay mesh is then connected by a mesh cylinder to a circular underlay patch. To place the device, a surgical opening (open surgery) is made, and the circular underlay patch of the devices is placed below the deeper layer of the muscles (pre-peritoneal). The overlay is then placed covering the top layer of muscles. Such a positioning allows the devices to hold its position firmly and is not displaced easily. Use of 3D mesh is recommended for hernia types such as: Inguinal and Umbilical hernias. In short the PROLENE 3D patch mesh is a sterile, 3 dimensional device for the repair of small abdominal wall hernias – offering the benefits of tension-free hernia repair with the efficiency of 3 easy steps. This consists of three attached components:

  12. 3D Mesh Repair for Hernia • An underlay patch that provides for an effective posterior repair on the inside of the abdominal wall giving the benefits of laparoscopic repair. • A connector similar to plug but smaller and flatter • An only patch that fits over the abdominal wall giving the benefits of open mesh repair “A device (prolene hernia system)has been designed to overcome many of the disadvantages of tension free hernia repair technique which is currently used primarily to repair direct and indirect inguinal hernia “, says Pune’s leading Colorectal Surgeon Dr. Ashwin PorwalHe has operated more than 5000 hernia's till date.for 3D mesh repair.

  13. Benefits of 3D Mesh Repair • As the device lies flat against the abdomen, it has virtually no chance of migrating like other devices. • Usually a minimal number of stitches are needed to secure the device, reducing discomfort and the chance of nerve damage. • Most important the 3 D mesh device provides the benefits of strong posterior repair like a laparoscopic procedure • Very low recurrence rates • Smaller incision ( generally about 2 inches) • Done under spinal anesthesia • Discharge within 24 hours and back to work from 3rd day after surgery.

  14. Dr. Ashwin Porwal remarks “ With this innovative option patients can now assure themselves of a faster recovery and guaranteed cure from Hernia. Healing Hands Clinic has offered such treatment to all types of patients from all over India & few from other countries as well.
