  1. Bell Work: Aug. 15th Write about times when you have been torn between something you always enjoyed as a child and some new interest. Grab a Pathways book.

  2. Beginning of class routine • I will greet you at the door and answer questions. • Look at projector screen. Look for which book or handout you need to pick up (textbook, Pathways, or novel). • Grab book. • Turn in homework that is due. • Be seated before bell rings. • Two week grace period before a tardy is given if you are not seated when the bell rings. • Begin bell work on the board (5-10 minutes). It is important to remain quiet during this routine. If you have questions, I will answer them before class or during my office hours

  3. Coming of Age Stories • The main character undergoes an adventure or inner struggle. • The character grows and develops due to the adventure or struggle. • Adventures may be violent and cruel. • Inner struggles may be about choices the character makes.

  4. Characterization • Is how the author reveals the character. Thinks Feels Talks Looks Moves What others say about the character Pay attention to these character traits for Sheila Mant and the narrator as we read.

  5. Answering an Essay Question Topic Sentence = Claim Supporting Idea = direct evidence from the text / story. Concluding sentence = explanation of the evidence from text and how it supports your claim.
