  2. The “JOIDES Resolution” drilling ship (“JR”) returned to sea in 2009 after a major refitting to continue its already-impressive history of making new discoveries from seafloor rocks and sediments! http://joidesresolution.org/ http://www.iodp.org/riserless-vessel/4/

LDEO Borehole Scientists aboard Each “Leg” Provide Valuable Data Once the JR retrieves a “core” of sediments or rocks, a suite of special geophysical instruments are sent back down into the hole to collect data that provides even more information about the environment of formation and later alterations of materials

Borehole Research Group (BRG) uses downhole geophysical measurements in a wide variety of scientific investigations • sea level variations • Paleoceanography • flow of fluids through fractured rock • thermal and mechanical properties of the ocean’s igneous crust • properties of natural gas hydrates

  5. Multi-Sensor Spectral Gamma Ray Tool (MGT) BRG is also actively involved in the development of new tools and techniques for acquiring and analyzing downhole data.

In today’s E2C Workshop, Dr. Helen Evans and Dr. Angela Slagle will share some of their experiences living and working aboard the JR. • Helen, originally from Wales, earned her BSc from the University of London and her MS and PhD from the University of Florida • Angela received her PhD from Columbia, following her BA from the University of North Carolina

  7. The History of Ocean Drilling Goes Back to the 1957 – 58 IGY The first successful ocean drilling vessel was CUSS 1, which demonstrated the potential for deep sea coring in a series of experiments during the spring of 1961. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Mohole

  9. Lamont and Ocean Drilling • Lamont scientists have been highly involved in ocean drilling from its beginning in the 1960s. Confirmation of the Seafloor Spreading Hypothesis • Almost as soon as the “Glomar Challenger” began its scientific drilling efforts, spectacular results were obtained! • During DSDP Leg 3 (1967), a series of cores confirmed that the age of the ocean floor varied, becoming progressive older on opposite sides of the mid-ocean ridgehttp://www.oceanleadership.org/classroom/plate_tectonics_nannofossils

  11. ODP: Ocean Drilling Project1983 - 2003 • DSDP was originally a USA-only operation, but gradually scientific institutions from many other countries began to participate • In 1983, DSDP evolved into the ODP • More about the ODP phase can be found at http://www-odp.tamu.edu/index.html

IODP: Integrated Ocean Drilling Program2004 -- present • Current international marine research program to explore Earth's history and structure as recorded in seafloor sediments and rocks, and monitor subsea floor environments. • Greatly expands the reach of previous programs by using multiple drilling platforms, including riser, riserless, and mission-specific, to achieve its scientific goals.

The Consortium for Ocean Leadership • Washington, DC-based nonprofit organization that represents 97 of the leading public and private ocean research and education institutions, aquaria and industry with the mission to advance research, education and sound ocean policy. http://www.oceanleadership.org/

E2C and Ocean Drilling • Dr. Gerry Iturrino, now the BRG’s Manager of Engineering and Technical Services, served as Principal Investigator when Earth2Class received National Science Foundation support from 2004 – 2006. • Gerry, Trevor Williams, and other BRG scientists have worked with E2C, the IODP’s “School of Rock,” and Teachers at Sea.

  19. JR and K – 12 Education • Teacher-at-Sea programs Classroom teachers have served aboard several expeditions, beginning with Jonathan Rice in Expedition 301. E2C sponsored a ship-to-shore teleconference with Jonathan and Gerry during his trip.

IODP’s School of Rock • During a transit cruise in 2005, about a dozen teachers joined Leslie Peart, Consortium for Ocean Leadership Education Director, for the first SOR • With the JR in drydock for its refitting in 2007, the second SOR showed teachers (including me) what scientists learn as they study the cores stored at the Gulf Coast Repository at Texas A & M in College Station.

What else could the future bring? • Maybe at some point in the future we will be able to fulfill a dream hatched over lunch in the Lamont cafeteria more than seven years ago to take a group of E2C teachers aboard LDEO’s research ship, the “Marcus G. Langseth,” during a transit cruise. Or maybe you’ll have “teacher-at-sea” opportunities during research cruises? Who knows? • In the meantime, we’ll always have kayaks!
