  2. A Brief History Wayne L. Gordon is founding Pastor of Lawndale Community Church and Chairman/President of the Christian Community Development Association (CCDA) In 1975 Wayne moved to North Lawndale located on Chicago's Westside Wayne and Anne (his wife), along with some local high school students, founded the Lawndale Community Church. Today, LCC has over 1000 worshipping families and Wayne continues as pastor. He is one of the founders of the Lawndale Christian Health Center, a healthcare ministry that sees over 120,000 patients per year. Wayne was the founding president of the Lawndale Christian Development Corporation. The Development Corporation is the arm of Lawndale Community Church that facilitates economic development, education and housing. LCDC has seven different housing ministries and under Wayne's leadership, over 400 units of abandoned housing have been rehabbed. LCDC places special emphasis on home ownership for residents of the community. Over 200 young people have graduated from college with more than half returning to live and work in North Lawndale. Wayne Gordon helped to formulate the Christian Community Development Association (CCDA). CCDA is a network of individuals and ministries nationwide who engage in Christian community development efforts. At various times, CCDA has had 600 organizational members and 10,000 individual members. CCDA meets annually to share skills and network together. Over 2000 people attend the national CCDA conferences and the CCDA movement continues to expand. Lawndale Community Church was given a "Point of Light" award by President George Bush in 1989 and Chicago Magazine named Wayne one of the Chicagoans of the year in 1995 for his commitment and creativity.

Community Nutrition Fresh Moves In the city of Chicago entire communities have severely limited access to fresh fruits and veggies, and therefore suffer from significant health issues related to poor diets. After reading a 2006 report that mapped food deserts in Chicago, Steven Casey and Jeff Pinzino were soon joined by Sheelah Muhammad banded together to work on a solution. Though not an easy problem to solve due to the fact that opening a traditional market wouldn’t address the multi-neighborhood needs quickly or efficiently, these three community activists decided to put the whole thing on wheels! Able to secure a bus, donated from the CTA, they partnered with Architecture for Humanity to transform the bus into a mobile produce market. They worked with volunteers at EPIC to put together this website. And now, they’re working hard to bring the Lawndale community fresh, delicious, nutritious produce – and educating the public at large about how fun it can be to eat healthily. Fitness Center guests are encouraged to join on a monthly membership basis--there is no joiner fee--but also have the option to pay for daily use. Our rates are designed to be affordable. PSN accomplishes this objective through a multi-faceted approach that includes law enforcement, intervention and prevention strategies. PSN announced in 2005 the national anti-gun violence program is expanding to the city’s 10th Police District (Marquette), which encompasses the Little Village, Pilsen, and Lawndale neighborhoods on the city’s near southwest side. PSN also announced the expansion to the 10th District of “parolee forums,” a PSN component that communicates directly with felons convicted of gun crimes and was pioneered in Chicago.

  9. Summary North Lawndale community is a community that offers many types of services. Resources such as daycare services, adult transitioning services, safety resources and spiritual resources all work together in creating a productive community establishment. From the time of its organization in 1857 the North Lawndale community has been home to many nationalities including Russian Jews, Mexican Americans and African Americans. Expanding its population and available resources over time, the community has undergone many exciting changes and continues to grow still. The neighborhood has found itself no longer at the bottom of the heap, but rather a focus of renewed interest by the public and private sectors as people rediscover the many strengths of this community There are plans in the works currently for the new construction of the present health center. The new Health and Wellness Center for the Lawndale Christian Health Center will represent a major step forward in their goal to “Create a Culture of Wellness” in Chicago’s North Lawndale Community.
