  1. CHAPTER 3 Chemicals in organic and pharmaceutical laboratories

  2. Chemicals in Organic Chemistry Laboratories Labeling of Chemicals: All chemicals present in a research or training laboratory must be labeled appropriately. This is simply a very critical safety rule. Therefore, students should never use a chemical container without a label on it. In addition, it is expected that all students properly label the chemical containers that they prepare.

  3. Storage of Chemicals, Chemical Cabinets, and Laboratory Registration There are rules for the storage of chemicals in laboratories. Some of them are related to the safety guidelines and some of the rules are created to easily find a chemical in a laboratory.

  4. There are lots of laboratory cabinets to store chemicals. Each cabinet has to have a label on it. Acid and base cabinets are separately designed to store acids and bases, respectively. It is a safety rule that no acid solution container should be stored near by a base solution container.

  5. Chemical SegregationStore acids in a dedicated acid cabinet. Nitric acid should be stored alone unless the cabinet provides a separate compartment for nitric acid storage.Store highly toxic chemicals in a dedicated, lockable poison cabinet that has been labeled with a highly visible sign.Store volatile and odoriferous chemicals in a ventilated cabinet.

  6. Store flammables in an approved flammable liquid storage cabinet.Store water sensitive chemicals in a water-tight cabinet in a cool and dry location segregated from all other chemicals in the laboratory.

  7. Storage Don’tsDo not place heavy materials, liquid chemicals, and large containers on high shelves.Do not store chemicals on tops of cabinets.Do not store chemicals on the floor, even temporarily.Do not store items on bench tops and in laboratory chemical hoods, except when in use.

  8. Do not store chemicals on shelves above eye level.Do not store chemicals with food and drink.Do not store chemicals in personal staff refrigerators, even temporarily.Do not expose stored chemicals to direct heat or sunlight, or highly variable temperatures.

  9. Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for Organic Compounds MSDS is the abbreviation of “Material Safety Data Sheet”. MSDS for organic compounds give information on organic molecules in terms of hazard and health issues. An MSDS for organic molecule can be easily found through various web sites.
