Printmaking Terms. And Their Definitions. Brayer. the roller used to apply ink to the block. Block/ plate. Piece of flat material (wood, linoleum, metal, rubber) used to make a print. Burnish. to smooth a surface by rubbing it with a tool that has a hard smooth surface. Collograph.

  2. Brayer • the roller used to apply ink to the block

  3. Block/ plate • Piece of flat material (wood, linoleum, metal, rubber) used to make a print

  4. Burnish • to smooth a surface by rubbing it with a tool that has a hard smooth surface

  5. Collograph • A printmaking process made from arranged materials on a hard surface arranged lie a collage, ink is applied and the resulting prints is termed a collograph

  6. Edition • the total number of prints made at one time from the block (i.e. if 50 prints are made, on the bottom left hand corner of each print you would write 1/50, 2/50, 3/50, 4/50 etc.)

  7. Gouge • The V (chisel like) tool used to carve the block

  9. Ink • water based, thick consistency, used with brayer and applied to block.

  10. Inking tray • or slab • smooth, non absorbent surface to roll out ink

  11. Mirror Image • The print is the opposite of the block image

  12. Print • The image made from the block

  13. Pulling the Print • Slowly pulling away the paper from the block

  14. Reduction Print • A multicolored print made from one block which is carved away after each color/ layer has been printed

  18. Registration Guide • In printmaking processes requiring more than one application of ink or other medium, the problem exists as to how to line up properly areas of an image to receive ink in each application. The most obvious example of this would be a multi-color image in which each color is applied in a separate step. The lining up of the results of each step in a multistep printmaking process is called "registration."

  19. Relief print • Print created using the process where ink is placed on raised patterns of the whole block

  20. Rubbing • Technique used to transfer the textual quality of a surface or paper
