  2. Key Stage 4 The Context • An increasing emphasis on English and Maths GCSE and the other subjects of the ‘English Baccalaureate’; Science, a Language and History or Geography • A move to more assessment at the end of Year 11 • A variety of routes including GCSEs or Vocational Courses

  3. Key Stage 4 The Big Picture This academic year we are moving to: • Two year Key Stage 4 • Core subjects for 30 hours a fortnight • Meeting the requirements of the new KS4 National Curriculum 4OPTIONS Each option will have an allocation of: 5PERIODS

Key Stage 4The Core For 30 hours a fortnight in Year 10, ALL students will still have to study these subjects We would also expect the majority of students to study either History and/or Geography and/or a Language. • Religious Studies • PE • English Language and Literature • Maths • Science (Triple Science is in the core)

  5. Why is the core important? • Colleges, universities and employers expect students to have a good qualification in Maths, English and Science • An uncertain future – the better range of qualifications students have, the better future for them……..

  6. English Baccalaureate • The EBACC includes a grade C and above in the following subjects: • Maths • English Language • Two Sciences • MFL – French/Spanish • Humanities – Geography/History

  7. The Routes All routes have the same core curriculum

The Routes • The guided options curriculum is designed to help students gain the best possible KS4 qualifications • It does this by enabling students of varying skills and abilities to follow a personalised route. • The intention being, to raise attainment, allow maximum success and offer appropriate learning opportunities

  9. The Routes • Students are guided into a particular route based on their attainment/educational profile, strength and skills • No one route is ‘better’ than another. Each route serves our students with the best possible opportunities for success

  10. GCSEs Students can choose to study: • Child Development • Food Technology • French • Geography • Graphic Products • Health & Social Care • History • ICT • Media Studies • Physical Education • Sociology • Spanish • Textiles

Vocational Courses Students can choose to study Vocational Courses which: • Give them the knowledge and skills needed in an area of work • Have an external assessment – the new generation all have an external assessment element • Encourage continual feedback and improvement of work • Are graded Pass (C), Merit (B), Distinction (A) and Distinction*(A*) • In your booklet these are the courses called BTECs

  12. VocationalCourses You can choose: • Art and Design • Audio Production or Music • Business • Construction • Engineering • Performing Arts – Acting(Drama) or Musical Theatre • Sport Studies

  13. Other Courses • Study Plus - Additional Maths and English • Employability • Step Up • College courses

  14. Careers Service • Located in the LRC • Will provide information, advice and guidance about the courses • They will also provide specific information about which courses link to different progression routes and future careers • Debra Casson and Saima Parwana are our Careers Advisor

How to choose • Read the Options booklet carefully • Talk to your child and the teachers about the courses they are interested in • Think about their interests and what they would like to do after Year 11, at college or University and as a career • Do not choose because they like a particular teacher or because their friends are choosing that subject

What Next? • Option Choices forms collected this evening • Visit the subject areas • Helpdesk located in the LRC for other enquiries • Complete an evaluation form prior to leaving • Return the Choices Form by Friday 7th March to Form tutors or the main office • Some students will have a meeting about their option choices • Reserve choice: We cannot guarantee that every student will get their first choice; some courses may not run, for example if too few students pick the course.
