  2. Who Are We & Why Are We Here? Frank W. – NCRSC Chair Karina S. – NCRSC Secretary We were asked to come and facilitate a Workshop on “Being Of Service”

  3. Focus For This Workshop • Before we came to NA, we had very little • freedom. Recovery offers a world of • possibilities. • As we explore these possibilities, we learn • that we must take care of what we value. • We take care of NA by giving back – the • message and the chance to hear it. • NA services help Groups reach further. • Service allows us to help others find NA.

  4. Focus For This Workshop • How has someone else’ service • efforts helped us to find freedom • in NA? • How has our own service efforts • enhanced our personal recovery? • How can our service efforts inspire • others to get involved in service?

Intro To Large Group Discussion • Responsibility for fulfilling our primary • purpose lies with us. • When our services suffer from a lack of active • participation, our Groups are limited in their • ability to reach the still suffering addict. • Service helps free us from self-obsession by • shifting our focus from ourselves to others. • Other members’ service to NA made our • recovery possible; now it’s our turn to make • it possible for others.

  6. Large Group Discussion Question • We each have our own stories about • how we found recovery, and also • about how we got involved in service. • Question # 1: • How has someone else’s service efforts helped me to find freedom • in Narcotics Anonymous?

  7. Large Group Discussion Question • Just as we are examples of recovery, • we can be examples of service . . . • Question #2 • How has my own service efforts enhanced my personal recovery?

Large Group Discussion Wrap - Up • We have taken a look at how NA service has • touched our personal recovery and our lives. • We shared our personal stories and • experiences about service and the freedom • that we receive through being of service. • We discussed how “Our Freedom, Our • Responsibility” goes hand in hand with • “Being Of Service”.

  9. Suggested Ground Rules • Stay OPEN-MINDED • LISTEN and SHARE the time • Remember to PLAY WELL with others • Don’t forget WHY we’re here • STAY FOCUSED on the subject at hand

  10. Suggested Ground Rules • Lively CONVERSATION is productive • To AGREE and to DISAGREE - that is the • process • One more time – AVOID REPETITION • It’s important to START and STOP on time

  12. Brainstorming Guidelines • One good idea leads to another… good idea • “NO” and “CAN’T” do not exist • Creativity has no limits • Be part of – PARTICIPATE • Think fast, analyze later • Judging, evaluating, and criticizing are NOT brainstorming

  17. Intro To Small Group Discussion • As addicts, our freedom depends on what we • do to maintain it. Service is vital to recovery. • As sponsorship is crucial to personal • recovery, so is recruiting members into • service. This is an important part of being an • effective trusted servant. • The NA Groups allow us to collectively carry • our message of recovery, and in service we • can work collectively to inspire and • encourage other member to serve.

  20. Small Group Wrap - Up • Now that we have taken a look at what we • can all do to share in this responsibility, we • can now put this into action. • Write down 3things that you will commit • yourself to accomplishing in your service • efforts in the coming year.

  21. Session Wrap - Up • As trusted servants, we can carry a message • about service to members who aren’t yet • involved. We can be creative with our • internal PR to help others see the value of • service. • As members, we live the Twelfth Step by • sharing the message and by serving NA. • NA has a profound effect on us; service is • our chance to have a profound effect on NA.
