  2. Prayer of the WeekThe Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

The meaning of the seven petitions • “Thy name be hallowed” - may God’s holiness be manifest (note: through us; Ez 36:23) • “Thy kingdom come” - may God’s authority reign in and over us; God as “king” • “Thy will be done” (phrase absent in Luke) - may God’s will and no other will shape us; Abrahamic perspective • “Give us this day our daily bread” - may God supply our need; physical, spiritual, eternal • “Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive…” - may we know repentance and forgiveness (central to Christ) • “Lead us not into temptation” - may we avoid wrong in a difficult world; seek God’s assistance • “Deliver us from evil” - may we be protected and saved from evil (ultimate reality at stake)

The Lord’s Prayer is not “new” (1) God as our “Father”: • “Look down from heaven and see, from thy holy and glorious habitation… thou art our father” (Isaiah 63:15-16): Jesus accentuates this relationship. (2) God as supplying our food/needs: • “…feed me with the food that is needful for me…” (Proverbs 30:8); Manna in the desert (Exodus); “Bread of Presence” in temple: God provides our needed food – Christians see this fulfilled in Christ Himself (“Take, eat, this is my body…”) (3) God offering forgiveness and seeking repentance: • “Forgive your neighbor the wrong he has done… your sins will be pardoned…” (Sirach 28:2): Jesus focuses on this, emphasizes and fulfills it. (4) God’s “kingdom” is what matters: “Thine, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty; for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted as head above all.” (1 Chronicles 29:11); Jesus teaches that the kingdom is upon us now; a key NT theme.
