Transformational Leadership • Leadership that goes beyond the transaction between leaders and followers and literally transforms or changes situations and circumstances through personal example and by establishing vision. • Followers of transformational leaders: • Become motivated to work harder • Become more sensitive to moral and ethical issues • Think and act more like leaders

  6. Transformational Leadership • Produces significant organizational change due to: high levels of intrinsic motivation, trust, commitmentand loyalty from followers • The best transformational leaders use both transformational and transactional leadership

  7. Hackman and Johnson • Both received PhD's in speech communication at the University of Denver • Focus on researching leadership and communication • Published a book together titled “Leadership: A Communication Perspective” • Have come up with 5 characteristics of a transformational leader

  8. 5 Characteristics of a Transformational Leader • Creative: seek new markets, products and clients and encourage innovation and experimentation • Interactive: communicate with followers to define and articulate ideas • Visionary: know where an organization is headed, providing purpose and commitment to others • Empowering: give power away to others and make them feel powerful • Passionate: love their jobs and the people they work with, motivating others to perform at their highest level
