  1. Crowns can be used in a variety of ways. A crown can be used to restore the appearance and functionality of a damaged or broken tooth. In other cases a dental crown can be used to support a weak or decayed tooth, which helps preserve the remaining healthy portion of the tooth. A crown can also be used to protect the tooth from further injury or to keep bacteria from entering a root canal. Dentists use dental crowns for a variety of reasons, including to maintain a beautiful smile. Crowns are available in many different shapes, sizes, and materials. Each type of crown has its own strengths and weaknesses, so it is important to speak with your dentist about the best option for your specific needs. Here at Parmer Lane, we offer three different types of crowns to meet our patients' needs: Porcelain crowns are very common and have a very natural look. This is due to the fact that porcelain closely resembles a patient's natural teeth in both color and texture. Porcelain crowns are also very durable and can last for several years with proper care. Zirconia is another popular type of dental crown that has become very popular for its durability and aesthetic properties. Zirconia is extremely strong and can withstand a lot of pressure, which is a benefit if you have a tooth that has been restored with a full coverage filling or root canal therapy. Zirconia crowns are also very aesthetically pleasing and have the ability to resemble a natural tooth in both shape and color. Another common type of crown is a metal-ceramic crown, which is a combination of ceramic and metal. This type of crown has the benefits of both ceramic and metal, making it a very durable and strong choice. It is important to remember that ceramic can chip. To avoid this, we recommend avoiding foods and beverages that can be particularly damaging to your teeth. Lastly, full gold dental crowns are still used in some cases because of their durability and longevity. These crowns can become brittle with time and may require more tooth structure to be removed than other types. The newest technology in dental crowns is the CAD/CAM (computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing) technique. This TLC Dental method does not require messy goop, but instead uses a scanner to create a 3-D model of your teeth. The milling machine then fabricates a crown out of ceramic in a shade determined by your dentist. The restoration is then bonded with resin and hardened using high-energy curing light. This process allows us to provide a strong and long-lasting dental crown in a single visit! In addition, the CAD/CAM process allows for less damage to the healthy portions of the tooth.
