Aim: What caused the Age of Exploration?L79 Do Now: Copy your weekly words in your glossary Cartography- the art and science of mapmaking Age of Exploration- the time period in history in which Europeans began exploring all areas of the world Circumnavigate-to travel completely around something (ex. The Earth) Epidemic- a widespread disease Conquistadors - Spanish explorers and conquerors Mercantalism- economic policy where countries sell more than they buy

Age of Exploration---Causes • GOLD • Opportunity for wealth • In the form of new resources and colonies • GOD • Chance to convert new people to their religion • Used missionary missions to complete this • GLORY • Need to find new trade routes to Asia (this would make them famous) • Asia had spices that were highly desirable, especially for the preservation of food • Europeans wanted to stop the Muslim and Italian hold on Asian trade

  3. Advanced technology made the 3G’s happen!! • Compass-- invented in China, navigation device • Improved Maps-- with the creation of the longitude and latitude system maps are more accurate • Astrolabe-- navigation device that uses the stars to pinpoint location.
