  1. Introduction to the common core state standards Presented by evergreen elementary irts

  2. What is the common core? • The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. • www.corestandards.org

  3. College and career readiness • The Common Core State Standards will provide our children with the tools they need to be ready for college and/or careers upon exiting high school. • These standards include: • Rigorous content and application of knowledge through high-order skills • Build upon strengths and lessons of current state standards • Evidence and/or research-based.

  4. THE SMCPS PLAN • 2011 – 2012 School Year: • Students in grades Pre- K to 1 were fully implemented in the Common Core • Grades 2 – 5 continued using Maryland State Curriculum but implemented parts of the Common Core. • 2012 – 2013 School Year: • Students in grades 2 & 3 are now fully implemented in the Common Core. (Students in grade 3 will take MSA in 2013. Therefore, teachers are still responsible for the Maryland State Curriculum as well.) • Grades 4 & 5 are still using Maryland State Curriculum with continued implementation of pieces of the Common Core. (Students in grades 4 & 5 will take MSA in 2013.)
