  1. Layer 2 Control Protocol BoF (L2CP) IETF 65, Dallas, TX Wojciech Dec (wdec@cisco.com) Matthew Bocci (matthew.bocci@alcatel.co.uk)

  2. Administrivia • Blue Sheets • Note takers + Jabber Scribe • Mailing List: General Discussion: l2cp@ietf.org To Subscribe: l2cp-request@ietf.org In Body: subscribe your_email_address Archive: http://www.ietf.org/mail-archive/web/l2cp/index.html

  3. Agenda • Introduction/agenda tweaking (Chairs) • Problem description (Thomas Haag) • Overview of proposed protocol solution (Sanjay Wadwha) • Proposed Work Items & Charter (Chairs) • Discussion and focus • Is there interest on working on this? • Is the proposed charter a reasonable start?

  4. Introduction and Scope • L2CP is about: • Common, IP-based protocol that operates across a number of access and aggregation network technologies • Operates between access node (e.g. DSLAM) and aggregation device (BRAS/BNG) • Enable specific tasks that are not automated today: • access line topology discovery, triggering remote local loop OAM tests, dynamic local loop line configuration, communicate multicast state between access node and BNG • L2CP will NOT: • Address or replace control plane of the underlying aggregation network e.g. ATM VCs, Ethernet VLANs etc

  6. Problem Statement • Thomas

  7. Proposed Protocol • Sanjay

  8. Issues • Applicability of GSMP and evolution (media specific encapsulations, IPSec, Partitioning, etc) • Scalability of transport protocol and messaging for large scale deployments • High Availability/Graceful Restart/Stateful switchover (redundant controllers)/non disruptive state refresh • Database scalability and handling stale entries • Protocol Security/peer authentication • Applicability to other broadband access technologies

  9. Proposed Work Items • Framework / Requirements • Describe use cases • Identify specific protocol requirements • Protocol Spec • Define extensions to existing protocol • Proposal to extend a subset of GSMPv3 • Extensions to address issues • MIBS

  10. Interactions with other IETF WGs and standards bodies • DSL Forum • Use cases and requirements • WT-147 "Layer 2 Control Mechanism for Broadband Multi-Service Architectures"

  11. Discussion • Is there interest in this work? • Comments on the charter • Is the proposed charter a reasonable start? • What should the WG name be?
