  1. y = mx + b or Inspect the equation to see that m = and b = - 2. Lines: Slope-Intercept Equation The slope-intercept equation of a line is y = mx + b. Here, m is the slope and b is the y-coordinate of the y-intercept on the line’s graph . Example 1: Find the slope and y-intercept of the line, 2x + 3y + 6 = 0. Solve for y: 2x + 3y + 6 = 0 2x + 6 = - 3y

  2. In fact, since additional points can be plotted by moving down 2 units and left 1 unit. Lines: Slope-Intercept Equation Example 2: Sketch the graph of the line, 2x – y = 3 using the slope-intercept equation. The slope-intercept equation is y = 2x – 3. To quickly sketch the line, first plot the y-intercept, (0, - 3). Then use the slope, m = 2, and move 2 units up and 1 unit to the right to plot a second point. This can be repeated as often as needed. Slide 2

  3. The slope is and the y-intercept is (0, - 6). Lines: Slope-Intercept Equation Try: Find the slope and y-intercept of 3x – 4y = 24. Slide 3
