  2. The Apollo Program • Itwas initiated by U.S President John F. Kennedy on May 25, 1961. • American manned lunar-space program designed to land an astronaut on the moon and return him safely to earth. • Also intended to overtake the former Soviet Union in the space race.

  3. Apollo 1 • Friday, 27 January 1967 • Grissom, Chaffee, and White • problems immediately occurred • a strange odor in spacesuit loop • high oxygen flow indication • communication problems • “Fire in the cockpit” • all astronauts died
