  2. HISTORY • More than 240 million people around the world play soccer regularly. • Records trace the history of soccer back more than 2,000 years ago to ancient China. Greece, Rome and parts of Central America also claim to have started the sport. • The game has evolved from the sport of kicking around a rudimentary animal-hide ball, human head, or animal bladder, into the World Cup sport it is today.

  3. HISTORY • Modern soccer was born in 1863 when the English Football Association was founded and set the first basic rules. • Red and yellow cards were introduced during the 1970 World Cup finals. • Red card results in ejection from game, yellow card results in a verbal warning.

  5. HOW TO PLAY • There are 11 players including the goalie. • Play initiates with a kickoff by a player. This player is not allowed to touch the ball again until it is touched by another player. • Regulation game is 2-45 minute halves. • Points are scored by advancing the ball into the opponent’s goal. • The team with the most goals at the end of regulation and stoppage play wins. • There is no time outs. Game is played on a continuous clock.

  7. DEFENDERS The 3 or 4 players on a team whose primary task is to stop the opposition from scoring; also called fullbacks.

  8. MIDFIELDERS The 2 to 4 players who transition the ball from offense to defense; they play behind their forwards

  9. FORWARDS The 3 or 4 players on a team who are responsible for most of a team's scoring; they play in front of the rest of their team where they can take most of the shots; also called strikers and wingers.

  10. GOALIE The player positioned directly in front of the goal who tries to prevent shots from getting into the net behind him; the only player allowed to use his hands and arms, though only within the penalty area

  11. KICKOFF The method of starting a game or restarting it after each goal; a player passes the ball forward to a teammate from the center spot.

  15. LEAD PASS A forward pass made ahead of a moving teammate

  16. HEADING Advancing the ball with the player’s head HEADING VIDEO

  17. GOALTENDING Stopping the opposing team from scoring in your goal

  18. THROW IN Throwing a ball over the head to put it back in play while keeping feet on the ground

  19. PENALTY KICK Direct free kick from the penalty mark.

  20. OUT-OF-BOUNDS KICKS Goalie Kick Corner Kick If the attacking team was the last to touch the ball when it goes out of bounds behind the endline, then a goalie kick is awarded. If the defendingteam was the last to touch the ball when it goes out of bounds behind the endline, then a corner kick is awarded.
