  12. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION M: Friends in Christ: Let us confess our sins to God our Father and ask him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us.

  13. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION C: We confess that we are born in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have failed to do.

  14. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION C: We have not loved you with our whole heart, and we have not loved our neighbour as ourselves. We deserve your eternal punishment. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

  15. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION C: Forgive us, renew us, and lead us,so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

  16. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION M: As a called and ordained servant of the word, I announce the grace of God to all of you. On behalf of my Lord Jesus Christ, and by his command, I forgive the sins of all of you who repent and believe, in the name of the Father and of the Son † and of the Holy Spirit. Peace be with you.   19. PRAYER OF THE DAY M: Let us pray for trust in God's care. C: Eternal God, we thank you that you make all things work together for good to those who love you. Help us cheerfully trust in you, knowing that your generous hands give us food and your watchful eyes keep us safe.

  20. PRAYER OF THE DAY We ask this through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

  21. FIRST READING 2 Samuel 11:1-15 CEV David and Bathsheba R: The first Reading for the 9th Sunday after Pentecost is written in Chapter 11 of Second Samuel, beginning at Verse 1.

  22. 2 Samuel 11:1-15 It was now spring, the time when kings go to war. David sent out the whole Israelite army under the command of Joab and his officers. They destroyed the Ammonite army and surrounded the capital city of Rabbah, but David stayed in Jerusalem.

  23. 2 Samuel 11:1-15 2-4Late one afternoon, David got up from a nap and was walking around on the flat roof of his palace. A beautiful young woman was down below in her courtyard, bathing as her religion required. David happened to see her, and he sent one of his servants to find out who she was.

  24. 2 Samuel 11:1-15 The servant came back and told David, "Her name is Bathsheba. She is the daughter of Eliam, and she is the wife of Uriah the Hittite." David sent some messengers to bring her to his palace. She came to him, and he slept with her.

  25. 2 Samuel 11:1-15 Then she returned home. 5But later, when she found out that she was going to have a baby, she sent someone to David with this message: "I'm pregnant!" 6David sent a message to Joab: "Send Uriah the Hittite to me.”

  26. 2 Samuel 11:1-15 Joabsent Uriah 7to David's palace, and David asked him, "Is Joab well? How is the army doing? And how about the war?" 8Then David told Uriah, "Go home and clean up." Uriah left the king's palace, and David had dinner sent to Uriah's house.9But Uriah didn't go home. Instead, he slept outside the entrance to the royal palace, where the king's guards slept.

  27. 2 Samuel 11:1-15 10Someone told David that Uriah had not gone home. So the next morning David asked him, "Why didn't you go home? Haven't you been away for a long time?”

  28. 2 Samuel 11:1-15 11Uriah answered, "The sacred chest and the armies of Israel and Judah are camping out somewhere in the fields with our commander Joab and his officers and troops. Do you really think I would go home to eat and drink and sleep with my wife? I swear by your life that I would not!”

  29. 2 Samuel 11:1-15 12Then David said, "Stay here in Jerusalem today, and I will send you back tomorrow." Uriah stayed in Jerusalem that day. Then the next day, 13David invited him for dinner. Uriah ate with David and drank so much that he got drunk, but he still did not go home. He went out and slept on his mat near the palace guards.

  30. 2 Samuel 11:1-15 14Early the next morning, David wrote a letter and told Uriah to deliver it to Joab. 15The letter said: "Put Uriah on the front line where the fighting is the worst. Then pull the troops back from him, so that he will be wounded and die."  This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

  31. Psalm 14CEV R: The Psalm is Psalm 14 R: 1Only a fool would say, "There is no God!": People like that are worthless; they are heartless and cruel and never do right. C: 2From heaven the LORD looks down to see if anyone is wise enough to search for him.

  32. Psalm 14CEV R: 3But all of them are corrupt; no one does right. C: 4Won't you evil people learn? You refuse to pray, and you gobble down the LORD'S people.

  33. Psalm 14CEV R: 5But you will be frightened, because God is on the side of every good person. C: 6You may spoil the plans of the poor, but the LORD protects them.

  34. Psalm 14CEV R: 7I long for someone from Zion to come and save Israel! Our LORD, when you bless your people again, Jacob's family will be glad, and Israel will celebrate. C:  Glory to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

  35. Second reading Ephesians 3:14-21 CEV The love of Christ R: The Second Reading is written in Chapter 3 of Ephesians, beginning at Verse 14.

  36. Ephesians 3:14-21 14I kneel in prayer to the Father. 15All beings in heaven and on earth receive their life from him.     16God is wonderful and glorious. I pray that his Spirit will make you become strong followers 17and that Christ will live in your hearts because of your faith.

  37. Ephesians 3:14-21 Stand firm and be deeply rooted in his love. 18I pray that you and all of God's people will understand what is called wide or long or high or deep. 19I want you to know all about Christ's love, although it is too wonderful to be measured. Then your lives will be filled with all that God is. 

  38. Ephesians 3:14-21 20-21I pray that Christ Jesus and the church will forever bring praise to God. His power at work in us can do far more than we dare ask or imagine. Amen.  This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

  39. gospel John 6:1-21CEV Jesus feeds 5000 people, and walks on the water M: The Holy Gospel is written in Chapter 6 of the Gospel according to St John, beginning at Verse 1 . C: Glory to you, O Lord .

John 6:1-21 Jesus crossed Lake Galilee, which was also known as Lake Tiberias. 2A large crowd had seen him work miracles to heal the sick, and those people went with him. 3-4It was almost time for the Jewish festival of Passover, and Jesus went up on a mountain with his disciples and sat down.

  41. John 6:1-21 5When Jesus saw the large crowd coming toward him, he asked Philip, "Where will we get enough food to feed all these people?" 6He said this to test Philip, since he already knew what he was going to do.

  42. John 6:1-21 7Philip answered, "Don't you know that it would take almost a year's wages just to buy only a little bread for each of these people?”

  43. John 6:1-21 8Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the disciples. He spoke up and said, 9"There is a boy here who has five small loaves of barley bread and two fish. But what good is that with all these people?”

  44. John 6:1-21 10The ground was covered with grass, and Jesus told his disciples to have everyone sit down. About five thousand men were in the crowd.
