  1. Review of:Ecologically Dangerous PatriotismJan Otto Andersson, James Farmelant & Mark Lindley By Shann Turnbull PhD sturnbull@mba1963.hbs.edu Principal: International Institute for Self-governance Presenter at 4th De-growth Conference of: “Strategies for promoting a sustainable de-growth society” Session on - ‘The transformative power of utopias and alternative paradigms’, Room HS11 from 11:00 – 12:15, Friday, September 5th 2014.

  2. Ecologically Dangerous Patriotism (EDP) The hypothesis presented: The ecology of the world is being put at risk by national patriotism competing for economic growth. The hypothesis seems to depend upon: National political leaders obtaining power by promoting growth? Proposed solution: Political leaders to form cooperative relationships to nurture the environment. However, might the solution be dangerous for leaders who obtain power by promoting growth? My paper suggests community led bottom up solutions

  3. Structure of EDP paper Pages 1-3 Outlines four broad historical stages of human development. Page 4 Reviews 17th and 18th century economic theories promoting economic competition. Pages 5-9 Describes economic growth competition between the USA, Britain and Germany in the 19th and 20th centuries. Pages 9-15 Discusses the role of mercantilism, national patriotism, economic competition and the need and possibilities for cooperation between nation states to resolve growing ecological problems

  4. Four broad historical stages of human development discussed Hunter-gatherers without significant settlements Herder-planters produce surpluses to form larger settlements that develop specialised crafts Formation of nation states and global trade with untapped opportunities for economic growth but not necessarily driven by patriotism 19th century rapid population growth and national patriotism especially in Britain and Germany;

  5. Some additional issues for consideration Role of religion in political colonisation and economic growth: Pope divides exploration of the16th century world between Portugal and Spain leaving out the English and the Dutch. Role of corporations in colonisation and growth: English and Dutch split from the Pope and develop the corporate concept in the 17th century as a way to both franchise and so privatise colonisation. Determinants of population growth and de-growth: Income security, education of women and birth control technology now producing de-growth in 60 nations. Patronage, patriotism and power from property rights to degradenature, individuals, society, democracy and the global commons: Incentives available to adopt on a bottom up basis ecological property rights to nurture nature and society on a sustainable basis as presented in my paper - Strategies for promoting a sustainable de-growth society, Friday, 11am in HS11.
