Roman Society • Religion • Believed in many gods • Most popular were the gods of Greece • Education • Great value on boys • Most schooling done at home • Best known for their Philosophical Schools • Entertainment • Public entertainment • Theater, chariot races, gladiator combat • Health • Baths were an everyday thing

  9. Foundations of Roman Republic • Early Days- Patricians “aristocratic families” ruled • Controlled every aspect • Plebians “common people” formed Plebian Council to fight the Patricians • Growing tensions between social classes led to social revolutions

  10. Plebian Council • Protect plebian affairs • Right to elect officials • Tribunes- protected plebians from injustice • Right to veto • Forced Patricians to have all laws written down displayed in Forum • Written on 12 large bronze tablets

  11. Constitution • Partricians and Plebians created an unwritten constitution, or political structure • Government had 3 parts • Senate- controlled finances • Assemblies- citizens voted on laws • Magistrates- put laws into practice

End of the Empire • Cause- Last of Good Emperors dies ending PaxRomana • Effect- Loss of land from invasions • Cause- Emperors created new coins • Effect- Growing Inflation • Cause- Emperor Diocletian created absolute monarchy • Effect- Split Empire into two East and West • Cause- Emperor Constantine created new capital in East • Effect- West was left unprotected • Cause- Romans did not make peace with migrating tribes • Effect- Attila and the Huns took over western empire
