  8. Scientific Notation Scientists often work with very large and very small numbers. They use powers of 10 to keep these numbers simple. Positive Exponents are used for very large numbers such as astronomy and physics. Example: The planet Mercury is about 9.17 x 107 kilometers (91,700,000 km) from Earth Negative Exponents are used for very small numbers, such as those used in chemistry and biology. Example: The diameter of a human blood cell is approximately 7 x 10 -6meters (.000007 m).

  9. Scientific Notation Scientists often write very LARGE numbers in scientific notation using positive exponents which consists of two factors. 1st Factor: a number less than 10. But greater than one. 2nd Factor: a power of ten.

  10. When changing a number from standard form to scientific notation or scientific notation to standard form remember:(the) POWER = (the) PLACESand large numbers have positive exponents and small numbers have negative exponents.

  15. Multiplying or writing each number in standard form (Power = Places): Example: power = +4 so jump decimal 4 places to make a LARGE number 4.5 x 104 = 4.5000 = 45,000 Example: power = -3 so jump decimal 3 places to make a small number. 21.75 x 10-3 = .02175 = .02175
