  2. FETLAR • UK HE Mathematics community project • Funded (by HEA and JISC) under the Open Education Resources Programme • Managed by Maths, Stats & OR Network (MSOR Network). FETLAR @ the 4th Irish Workshop on Math Learning and Support Centres • Finding Electronic Teaching, Learning and Assessment Resources • “finding” – i.e. collecting, creating and collating!

  3. Project Aims FETLAR @ the 4th Irish Workshop on Math Learning and Support Centres • Help students improve mathematical skills and competencies • Raise retention rate of first-year students • Make effective use of technology • Benefit all HE disciplines requiring Mathematics or numeracy • Overcome sustainability problems • Combine • MSOR community’s experience creating and using on-line resources with • Recent developments in open standards

  4. FETLAR Technical Infrastructure FETLAR @ the 4th Irish Workshop on Math Learning and Support Centres • FETLAR uses and continues to develop a number of open source projects, including: • QTItools/MathAssess: • MathQurate – question authoring • Constructr – assessment authoring • QTIEngine – question/assessment renderer • QTIPlayr – Moodle plugin/integration • Minibix – Question repository • STACK – “System for Teaching and Assessment using a Computer algebra Kernel”

  5. A Demonstration FETLAR @ the 4th Irish Workshop on Math Learning and Support Centres • Demo of FETLAR resources • …via the FETLAR Virtual Appliance • (a “black box” that will ultimately contain both content and the software infrastructure required to deliver it) • You will see • Examples of FETLAR learning materials • Using the FETLAR technical tools to deliver an integrated suite of electronic learning materials, including formative and summative assessments • MathAssess tools for e-assessment • MathQurate – authoring • Minibix - repository • QTIEngine – renderer (via the QTIPlayr Moodle plugin)

  6. Future Prospects FETLAR @ the 4th Irish Workshop on Math Learning and Support Centres • FETLAR project ends April 2010 • Sustainability – by then we need • Structure in place for submission of learning materials and assessments • Development and maintenance of infrastructure • Community involvement – that’s you!

  7. FETLAR Web Resources FETLAR @ the 4th Irish Workshop on Math Learning and Support Centres • Where to source FETLAR resources and to stay updated with the project: • http://stack.bham.ac.uk/course/view.php?id=14 (FETLAR home Moodle – login in as a “guest”) • http://stack.bham.ac.uk/mod/resource/view.php?id=395 (The FETLAR Virtual Appliance) • http://www.QTITools.org • http://aqurate.kingston.ac.uk (MathQurate) • http://stack.bham.ac.uk/ (STACK) • …or just bug me! • paul@kingston.ac.uk
