  1. Solutions for your Leaking Heating Oil Tank Home with an Underground Heating Oil Tank (UST)

  2. Vent & Fill Pipes are the visible signs that there is a Heating Oil Tank at this home. Home with an Underground Heating Oil Tank (UST)

  3. This cut-a-way view shows a typical Heating Oil Tank installation. Tanks are usually placed approximately 2 feet below the ground. Home with an Underground Heating Oil Tank (UST)

  4. Oil stains near the Fill Pipe DOES NOT mean a Tank has leaked. Home with an Underground Heating Oil Tank (UST)

  5. As the Tank ages, it will eventually leak. Home with an Underground Heating Oil Tank (UST)

  6. DOWN GRADIATIANT Soil Permeability, Porosity, Ground Water (if present), and Topography will determine the speed and direction the “Oil Plume” will travel. Home with an Underground Heating Oil Tank (UST)

  7. To determine if a Tank has leaked, Soil Samples are taken from opposite ends of and below the Tank . Home with an Underground Heating Oil Tank (UST)

  8. The remedy for a leaking Tank starts with pumping out the Tank. Next, the top is exposed and the interior cleaned in preparation for excavation. Home with an Underground Heating Oil Tank (UST)

  9. The Tank is then carefully excavated from the ground. Home with an Underground Heating Oil Tank (UST)

  10. Once the Tank is removed, you have Two Options to deal with the remaining Contaminated Soil. A.) Excavation of the Contaminated Soil. B.) Bio-Remediation Treatment of the Soil. Home with an Underground Heating Oil Tank (UST)

  11. Cleanup Option A: Excavation of Contaminated Soil In this process: All accessible Contaminated Soil is excavated and transported to an approved disposal facility. 5 to 10 feet 10 to 20 feet Up to 15 feet or more in depth Excavations vary in size depending severity of the leak.

  12. Cleanup Option A: Excavation of Contaminated Soil This method is recommended if a property is going to sell within 5 years. This option permits rapid site closure if the impacted Soil can be removed and clean samples obtained. 5 to 10 feet 10 to 20 feet Up to 15 feet or more in depth

  13. Cleanup Option A: Excavation of Contaminated Soil The disadvantage to this method is that it can be damaging to surrounding landscape, driveways, decks, etc. Below the surface, sewer lines, water lines and utilities could be impacted. 5 to 10 feet 10 to 20 feet Up to 15 feet or more in depth

  14. Cleanup Option B: Bio-Remediation Bio-Remediation is less intrusive than Excavation, but should be considered when a house will not be sold within the next 5 years.

  15. Cleanup Option B: Bio-Remediation This is an acceptable method by Regulatory Agencies. It can be done as an alternative to Excavation or as enhancement when Soil is not accessible for Excavation.

  16. Cleanup Option B: Bio-Remediation First: 2 inch Ports are installed and cut flush with the ground level . A gravel bed helps spread the Remediating Bacteria.

  17. Cleanup Option B: Bio-Remediation Next: Bio-Remediation & Oxygen is introduced into these ports over a period of time.

  18. Cleanup Option B: Bio-Remediation After several applications, the Soil will become more saturated with Oxygen and Remediating Bacteria.

  19. Cleanup Option B: Bio-Remediation Amount of Treatments and the length of time for Remediation to occur, depends on severity of contamination at each site.

  20. Cleanup Option B: Bio-Remediation Over a period of time, the Contamination will degrade and dissipate.

  21. Cleanup Option B: Bio-Remediation After the initial phase of Applications, the Ports will be cut and capped flush to the ground.

  22. Cleanup Option B: Bio-Remediation These Ports can be accessed in the future for additional Bio-Applications if necessary.

  23. Cleanup Option B: Bio-Remediation Cleanup Option A: Excavation of Contaminated Soil PROS:Remediation takes less time. CONS:More intrusive to the Property and Utilities. Generally more expensive. PROS:Less intrusive to Property.Generally Less expensive. CONS:May take a few years to complete.
