  3. The key to solving any puzzle is knowing what pieces belong – you know that the foods from the Food Guide Pyramid must be included in any meal plan – here are some other things to consider SOLVING THE MEAL PLANNING PUZZLE

  4. MEAL APPEAL A MEAL SHOULD LOOK AS GOOD AS IT TASTES! PAY ATTENTION TO THESE PIECES OF THE MEAL PUZZLE! COLOR SHAPE FLAVOR TEXTURE TEMP.

  5. COLOR • Colors come right from the artist’s palette! • Colors such as green, yellow, red, purple, orange, and creamy white are found • Use a wide variety to avoid boredom in meals

  6. SHAPE • Different shapes make a meal more attractive. • For variety try combinations of round foods, square foods, and rectangular foods

  7. TEXTURE • Contrasting textures also adds variety. • For instance, mashed potatoes might be matched with a crisp, green salad. Crispy stir-fried vegetables are a good contrast to rice.

  8. FLAVOR • Vary flavors to add interest to a meal. • Plan flavors that go well together. • Too many spicy or strongly flavored foods in one meal can fight with each other for attention!
