  2. Essay prompt • George Washington warned Americans in his farewell address not to get involved in foreign affairs. What international situations faced the first five presidents, and how well did each president follow Washington’s advice?

  3. Thesis statement • To create a thesis statement, turn the essay prompt into a one-sentence answer in which you state your opinion about which president did the best job, or worst job, of keeping America out of foreign affairs.

  4. Introductory paragraph • Write an introductory paragraph that acquaints the reader with the subject matter of the essay, and conclude the paragraph with your thesis statement.

  5. Body paragraphs • Write five body paragraphs, one for each president. Make sure you answer the following three questions for each president: • What threats from foreign affairs did the president face? Explain the background of the event. • What steps did the president take to minimize the threat? • How well did the president succeed in keeping the U.S. from becoming involved in the affairs of foreign countries?

  6. conclusion • Writing a concluding paragraph, summarizing the contents of the essay, restating the thesis in fresh wording, and ending with a takeaway sentence that leaves the reader with something to think about.
