  1. 'A simple start to blended learning in a summer school unit'

  2. About the unit: Mathematics for Engineers 2: • the second of 2 core units for all engineering students, • is a mathematical skills based unit, • was offered autumn and spring semesters, • has a high failure rate.

  3. Why summer school? With the introduction of a preliminary unit for those with a poor mathematics background students could still complete their mathematics before the start of year2.

  4. Why the use of online material? How to fit a full semester unit into a 6 week summer school and still maintain the same content and assessments?

  5. What I did? • Email all students enrolled in the unit at least a week from the start of the summer session. • Produce a powerpoint presentation that: - introduced myself - outlined the structure of the summer session - explained the set up of the vUWS site - detailed assessments - made clear the student’s responsibility to fully participate in the summer unit.

  6. Produce a short (30-40) minute recorded lecture outlining the main points of the topic, introduce specific mathematical language used and give some examples.

  7. Produce some video tutorials using a program called Camtasia.
