  1. Escola Básica e Secundária da Calheta Escola Básica e Secundária da Calheta is located on the south-western part of the island. This part of the island is very green and has a mean anual temperature of 20ºC. The municipality of Calheta is the biggest on the island (116km2). Calheta has a population of 11 870, and it is from this municipality that many people emigrated. The main activity in this area is agriculture (Banana, vine and sugar-cane plantations).

  2. School history Our school began operating initially as a preparatory school in1972. These rented installations were situated in the village of Calheta.   In 1981 the new buildings were built where the school stands today. There are five buildings and a gymnasium. Today the school is composed of three cycles of education with a total of 952 students.

The school buildings are composed by the following: • 29 classrooms - 1 library • 5 computer rooms - 1 multimedia room • 3 biology laboratories - 1 conference room • 2 science laboratories - a mini snack bar • 4 art / technical classrooms - a canteen • 2 music rooms - teacher’s staff room / snack bar • - school offices

  4. Our school is situated in a rural area and most of the students come from families who are engaged in agriculture. The level of education of the parents is very low and many find it difficult to accompany their children in their school life. Factors like big families, immigration and working in agriculture affects the students’ productivity. Many students have learning difficulties and need extra tuition, however they are very sociable and hardworking.

  5. The school symbol Our school symbol is a Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus). It is represented in the colour blue to symbolise the sky and the sea and the predominant colour of our area. This bird of prey is commonly found hovering over the area surrounding the school and the cliffs overlooking the sea – representing liberty, space and regional identity.
