  1. Noninfectious Disease Mr. Fox 7th Grade Science Class

  2. Immunity • Noninfectious Disease – diseases that are not spread from person to person. • What are some noninfectious diseases?

  3. Allergies • Allergy – a disorder in which the immune system is overly sensitive to a foreign substance, something not normally found in the body. • Allergen – the substance that causes the allergy.

  4. How it Happens • The allergen gets into the body, and antibodies are produced. • The body then releases a chemical called histamine, which is responsible for sneezing, watery eyes, rash… ect. • The histamine causes the immune system to freak out about the allergen causing a much more violent reaction.

  5. Asthma • Asthma – respiratory disorder in which the passages narrow significantly. • Causes wheezing and shortness of breath • Attacks can also be triggered by stress and exercise. • Asthma attacks can get so bad that emergency medical help may be needed.

  6. Diabetes • A disorder in which the pancreas no longer produces insulin. • High levels of glucose in the blood and the urine, but not in the cells. • Effects if not treated • Blindness, Kidney failure, heart disease, loss of limbs.

  7. Cancer • Most common Cancers in the US as of 2000 • Men - Prostate, Lung, Large Intestine, Bladder • Women – Breast, Lung, Large Intestine, Uterus

  8. Cancer • A disease in which the cells multiply uncontrollably, destroying healthy tissue. • Tumors – mass of abnormal tissue • Caused by carcinogens. Ultraviolet light from the sun, tar from smoking, other chemicals.
