  1. World of Work Interview Guest Workers

  2. Learning Objectives Speak, listen and respond appropriately to a variety of Guest workers. Know what people do when they are at work. Know how to get a specific job.

  3. Success Criteria I can ask appropriate questions of someone I don’t know. I can listen to answers, interpret them and ask an appropriate related question. I can work in a team to identify related skills and activities needed for a particular job and therefore identify the job.

  4. Assembly – introducing Guest workers What jobs do you want when you are older? What are the Guests’ names? What job were they thinking of when they were your age? What job do you think they are doing now?

  5. Guest Interviews – in classrooms Guess The Job (5 mins) - ‘What’s my job?’. Ask closed questions (Yes/No answers) to find out their job. Main Interview (15-20 mins) – ‘Find out more’. Ask open questions to find out what it’s like to do their job. Ask for Question Cards if you need help. When you have finished, move to the next classroom to meet the next Guest.

  6. How to ask questions be thoughtful, listen carefully learn forward, make eye contact ask something unusual ask follow-up questions to show you are listening try not to repeat anyone else’s question.

  7. Some good closed questions Do you make things? Do you have a boss? Do you sell things? Do you travel abroad? Do you wear a uniform? Do you have to drive? Do you work outdoors? Do you work with animals? Do you handle money? Do you work nights?

  8. Some good open questions What are the best parts of your job? How do you get to work and how long does it take? What kinds of people do you like to work with? Which parts of your job are most tiring? What tools do you use in your job? What would you do if you were suddenly unemployed? What was your first job and how did you get it? What is the best job you have ever had? Which parts of your job worry you? What were your experiences of school?

  9. Evaluation – in the classroom Complete the questionnaire to show what you have learned. This will help you reflect and help us to do World of Work better in the future. Try to answer all the questions.

  10. Assembly – what have we learned Pupil volunteers come to the front and each say what one of the Guest’s job is and what it involves. What have the Guests enjoyed about working with the children? What have the children enjoyed about working with the Guests?
